Feux d’artifice

l’International des Feux Loto-Quebec presented by TelusMontreal’s annual fireworks festival — properly (and clumsily) named l’International des Feux Loto-Quebec presented by Telus — began last weekend and continues each Saturday (and some Wednesdays) until early August.

The fireworks are shot from La Ronde, and the promoters obviously encourage spectators to buy park admission to watch, but surely there are lots of opportune places all over the city to view the spectacle from without spending any money.

Where do you think is the best place to watch from?

  1. Easy.

From the roof of one of the marine elevators in the old port – but you need to get there early in order to get access without being seen. A more “family friendly” location would be from the lookout at the back of the Science Center.

I much prefer seeing fireworks from afar when provided with beautiful foreground.

  2. We used to have friends who lived in one of the tall apartment buildings on Sherbrooke near St. Denis. They had an amazing view! It was fun to watch all the other people who were out on other rooftops and were also watching.

The show were (are?) choreographed with music which could also be heard on one of the radio stations. We were far enough away that the light and sound were a bit out of sync….

  3. We go up Notre-Dame, from Old Montreal and enjoy them from there. There are always plenty of cars with their radios on, so we have the full effect, sometimes out of sync, but nonetheless, the price is right!

  4. How could they possibly be out of sync?

The music is designed to be in sync with view of the explosion of the shell. The view of it exploding travels….well…at the speed of light. You would have to be viewing them from the moon for it to be out of sync.

(Actually, considering radio waves also travel at the speed of light, they would also be in sync on the moon as well.)

  5. Steve, the actual bangs do travel at the speed of sound, so you hear them out of sync with the music if you’re far away.
