Folding bike rally Tuesday

You’ve seen them whizzing around town. Adults on bikes with little wheels. What are they riding? How can they go so fast? It looks so easy. Maybe I can do it…

If you’ve ever wondered anything at all about folding bikes — or “foldies” as they are sometimes called — now is your chance to find out more at this month’s Folding Bike Rally.

What: A Folding Bike demonstration and ride event just in time for the holidays!

When: Tuesday, December 11 @ 11:45am-12:45pm

Where: Toronto-Dominion Centre (south-west corner of King at Bay)

What to Wear: Business dressy or your Sunday best! (Holiday reds and greens encouraged.)

Why: To demonstrate folding bikes, promote cycling, and have a fun
ride around the financial district.

There are folding bike rallies all over the place, from the U.K. to Chicago, but I think that our friendly neighbourhood foldie fans are by far the most stylish (aided in part by the very cool Mies van der Rohe designed backdrop, pictured below.)

As an outsider (I don’t yet own a folding bike) the biggest appeal would seem to me to be the ability to carry the bike on the train or transit — particularly useful during rush hours. If you are interested in reading more about folding bikes, this article from New York’s Transportation Alternatives provides a very comprehensive review.

  1. Thanks for posting the Folding Bike Rally info!

    A note about tomorrow’s event:

It’s likely going to be snowing/raining at noon, so instead of biking around the financial district, we will probably fold our bikes up, and head indoors to a nearby cafe to enjoy a warm coffee/tea while showcasing the stylish versatility of the folding bikes!

    (same meeting location – King/Bay)

    Hope to see you there!

    Cheers,
    Justin
