Have you seen the RedBall?

Kurt Perschke’s RedBall, appearing in different parts of the city during Luminato, is one of my favourite public art projects I’ve seen in Toronto. For the last 30 minutes, I’ve stared blankly at my screen trying to think of all the reasons why I like it, but  the only thing my brain keeps saying is, “it just feels good.”

It’ll be at Ryerson’s Podium Building today (Friday) and in an alley at 567/569 Queen West on Saturday.

  1. A giant clown nose on Old City Hall! What’s not to love?

Is it me, or is there a weird stretchy effect happening in the top right-hand corner of the photo?

The photo is apparently taken with a wide-angle lens. Not just the top right, all four corners are stretched, if you look closer.

  3. Photo was taken with an ultra-wide angle lens (12mm). Sam probably straightened the vertical lines, which caused the other distortions. More of his photos from that day are here: http://wvs.topleftpixel.com/09/06/11/

I rode by there last weekend, and saw lots of people staring strangely at the ball and posing for photos, much like in Sam’s photo above. It’s certainly eye-catching, fun, and an unexpected surprise.

  4. it just feels right becuase it is! I mean – what is more amazing than seeing, among all the stoic, straight lines of archtecture, a huge red, amazing, FUN red ball!! I loves it.

  5. Though I found it awkward at FCP a few days ago–maybe because it was a little too big for the podium overhang it was squeezed into. Unless that was the intended effect; but, I don’t know…

  6. “Man Toronto is lame.”

I know, it would be better if some hair metal band was trying to set a record for longest public performance. It could be funded by getting a condom manufacturer to advertise with free samples.

    [/sarcasm]

  7. to ep:

I guess Chicago and Barcelona are also lame since they have also had RedBall used in their big art shows.

    If it were Anvil, maybe.
