Editor: Spacing is pleased to announce we’re resuming our partnership with the National Film Board of Canada to showcase films and interactive projects from their online screening room. Julie Matlin of the NFB will be occasionally posting films here on Spacing that explore public spaces, Canadian or international cities and anything urban. The NFB is one of Canada’s greatest resources. Click here to view their entire online collection.

Out My Window is a new interactive web documentary from the NFB’s Highrise project that explores the state of our planet by taking you inside the apartments of 49 people from 13 cities… and letting you look out their window. It’s one of the world’s first interactive 360° documentaries and it offers a wildly different perspective on our urban spaces. It’s also very, very cool.

Once on the site, click on any window to enter an apartment and take a tour. Once inside, you can click on people or objects to get more information. The photography is stunning and the stories compelling. It’s a whole new way to see the world.

For more on the project itself, read a guest post by director Kat Cizek on the NFB blog and visit the Highrise website.

  1. Man, if I lived in a high-rise, my life would be so much more interesting, like a Rabba with LED lighting. I wouldn’t be spending so much time doing boring things like reading the Justin Bieber memoir, First Step 2 Forever. I could park my stang in the aged to perfection 60s parking garage and drink Dos Equis in the richly trimmed marble and terrazo lobby. My concierge would be that old Italian guy, who would regale me with all sorts of tales of the old country…tax freeze for seniors, beautiful streets lined with just the most gorgeous rich pine fences of backyards and a fancy streetcar line that decided when the light was green.

It would be so much better than this Victorian street lacking in street life. Tooo much brick and gable on da brain. With free parking = 100,000 x better! I’ve had enough of the bylaw inspector stopping me for whearing a bright orange shirt! I want to live like dey do in NYC, funkin Yonge and She. Give me the high-rise directory, or lead me to the appropriate library community resources. Only now do I should have been reading Lastman’s memoir, Shepherd subway 4 FOREVA! Freedom and the pursuit of transit friendly car racing events. High rise high life, bay-be~!~~!
