In what is now central Vancouver, Canada, an Indian Reserve [now referred to as Sen̓áḵw] was established in 1869 by the Dominion Government of Canada for the Squamish First Nation. For many many years they had had a settlement at the mouth of False Creek where there was easy access to the ocean with its teeming fish and seafood. In 1886 settlers beginning with the Canadian Pacific Railway, then the Dominion and British Columbia Provincial Governments and the City of Vancouver occupied and expropriated the Indian Reserve and removed the Squamish Nation from the settlement.
