Cesar’s “liberal” ties

Posted by Matthew Blackett

A number of provincial Liberal party stickers have found their way on to the signs of Cesar Palacio. I wonder if this is official or just a prank. And if it’s not a joke, is it legal to display party affiliations on a municipal lawn sign? I know you can use the colours, but party politics is not allowed but I’m unsure to what extent party politics is allowed at city hall (outside of the nomination process of candidates, which is what the NDP does).

It’s funny that you posted this up today b/c over the last two days I’ve seen two huge signs for Bonnie Irwin, a candidate in Ward 42, with very promenent Liberal symbols on it. Their really big ads and look quite expensive… could their be Liberal $ involved here? Where’s my digital camera…

Are party politics really prohibited? I can’t find any mention of it in the Municipal Elections Act. And party politics have been a part of Toronto’s history, with both the Metro NDP and Civic Liberals. The Metro NDP ceased functions not due to legal restrictions, but because of the unpopularity of the provincial party in the 1990s.

Of course the issue here is different, since that is the Ontario Liberal logo. If it is official, it may raise questions about whether that constitutes a contribution from a provincial party to a municipal candidate, which is prohibited by law.

Whatever the case, I have a strong suspicion that the person behind this may also know who is behind the vandalism of Alejandra Bravo signs in the ward.

In Ward 12, candidate Joe Renda adds to his literature that he is a “Member of the Liberal party.” I’ve verified that Renda is in fact a member of the York-South Weston Federal Liberals, but I wonder if this kind of campaigning is allowed. For Renda’s sake I hope it is, and I hope he ends up winning.

Doug Lowry in my ward (Ward 20) states on his literature that is a member of the Conservative Party of Canada and Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario…which is pretty much the kiss of death in these parts.
