Wednesday’s links to election news

Premier cool to non-citizens having the vote [Toronto Star]: "Premier Dalton McGuinty has poured cold water on Mayor David Miller's push to let Toronto's 200,000 landed immigrants vote in municipal elections."
On the mayoral beat:

Mayor's nemesis facing challenge from Miller ally [National Post]: "Toronto has 44 city council seats. There is only one where Mayor David Miller openly yearns to take out the incumbent: Ward 16 in north Toronto, home of Councillor Karen Stintz."

Miller 'anti-905': Pitfield [Toronto Star]: "Mayor David Miller's partisan agenda and his "anti-905, anti-private sector" approach is alienating taxpayers in Toronto's suburbs, says his major challenger in the coming election, Councillor Jane Pitfield."

Miller's promises: new transit, new voters [Globe and Mail]: Jeff Gray reports, "Mayor David Miller promised yesterday to build new dedicated lanes for buses and streetcars, like the contentious ones on St. Clair Avenue, as a way to fight growing traffic congestion."

Miller pledges surface routes to ease gridlock [National Post]: "Mr. Miller noted it cost close to $1-billion to build the Sheppard subway line and the proposed expansion of the Spadina line to York University will cost $2-billion. In comparison, the streetcar right-of-way on St. Clair Avenue currently under construction will cost just over $100-million when it is completed."

And I'd like to thank the Sun for my favourite headline and lead of the day:

Miller a car killer [Toronto Sun]: "There will be less room on the roads for cars and more lanes reserved for buses and streetcars if David Miller gets to hold on to the keys to the mayor's office for a second term."

Outside of the T-dot:

Mississauga councillor broke rules [Toronto Star]: "Councillor Eve Adams violated the city's conflict-of-interest policy by ordering two employees to work on her re-election campaign, an internal investigation at Mississauga City Hall has concluded."

Crying foul over signs sabotage [Toronto Star]: "Deb Schulte has had dozens of signs hacked and cut. Particularly disturbing to her are ones that look like horror film character Freddy Krueger has dragged his razor-like fingers through a photograph of her face."

David Miller or Megacity Toronto and it's future? Do you really want to re-elect him as Mayor of Toronto? by GO TO
http://megacitytoronto.blogspot.com

It seems to me there is something going on in the house when people vote for someone who for one thing was never born in the house in the first place. Like don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong I suppose that David Miller is an American first and foremost having been born in San Francisco, California. But how can he feel the heart beat of this city if his first
breath was never taken here? Not even in Canada you say!

I suppose one could say that this doesn't really matter. But it sure seems that since electing this American as the Mayor of Toronto in the first place the gun crime rate has shot up just like it is in the United States.

Is it just coincidence? Might be might not, but you have your own mind don't you? I guess the new rash of drive-by shootings has me wondering. Considering this kind of crime was virtually unheard of in Toronto before he was elected.

So let us look at David Miller and his political losses shall we? And then we will highlight and open your eyes some more!

He first campaigned for Toronto city council in 1991 and lost to incumbent councillor Derwyn Shea

He than ran for Parkdale High Park in the 1993 federal election under the NDP and lost again to Liberal incumbent Jesse Flis.

Again he campaigned for the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1996 for the NDP and lost to Liberal Party candidate Gerard Kennedy

He sought in 2000 the election for chair of the TTC and lost to Brian Ashton.

With a track record like this one I wonder how he ever got elected as Mayor of Toronto in the first place. Oh we know that in 2003 he continually used his opposition for a bridge to the Island Airport in order to gain media attention and subsequently be voted in. As he had a vendetta against the former Mayor Mel Lastman who wanted to see it built!

David Miller opposed the amalgamation to Megacity Toronto by Mike Harris.

But we have it don't we!

David Miller opposed the plan to ship Toronto's garbage to the Adams Mine.

But he sure is willing to ship it to London, Ontario.

David Miller opposed the building of a bridge to the Toronto Island Airport because of his plan to revitalize the waterfront.

But he sure failed the bid as he did not make the deadline of November 3rd for the World Expo 2015 that would of allowed for the revitalization of this waterfront.

As Mel Lastman put it back when "You will never be mayor of this city because you say stupid and dumb things!" in regards to David Miller

But for the most part the people did not listen in 2003 to what Megacity Mel was saying. He was just trying to warn you of a future with David Miller at the helm.

What does it take for us to realize that Mel Lastman was right? Do we need to see more of our citizens dead on the streets because of the continued increase in gun violence. Because David Miller did not initially increase the police presence in time. Looking at only his bottom line. Only hiring more officers as the death toll got out of hand. Now the death toll continues!

How many more opportunities will the city of Toronto lose and how many more can we afford. How many more lies!

"I will be a tireless promoter of Toronto's bid for Expo 2015.

I want Toronto to experience this. So, to further strengthen the waterfront, and the economy I want Toronto to host Expo 2015. This will generate $ 8.1 billion in economic impact, create 143,000 jobs in Toronto, and attract nearly 40 million visitors." David Miller Election speech September 29, 2006

When you vote November 13th. Vote for none of what is above. Vote for someone who will bring Megacity Toronto into the future. For someone who wants Megacity Toronto. And not the "amalgamated Toronto" term that David
Miller so uses.

Let's really take out the trash and recycle!

Vote for Megacity Toronto!

The above comment is hilarious, and slightly offensive.

It looks like it was written with the analytical skills of a grade 9 student.

Just because Miller wasn't born here doesn't mean he's not quailified to be mayor. He has lived her for 25 years and calls it home. That's a stupid, stupid assertion.

And somehow Mel Lastman is a better example of a mayor than Miller? Even Miller's most strident opponents would not even say that.

Obivously, GO TO has forgotten that pre-megacity most of our city services were de;livered timely and were adequate. One of the reasons we're in dire financical straights isbecause of Mel's leudicrous promise not to raise property taxes. The other is the amalgamation. We've been screwed by Lastman and harris and now McGuinty is having a hard time understanding what it takes to make Toronto fly.

It certainly isn't the megacity model.

I commend Spacing for letting such asinine comments to appear because I would've deleted this one for its sheer stupidity.

^Gloria> We believe GOTO is constructing a grand satire of...everything, and mixing the US midterm elections with the city election here for added bonus. David Miller grew up in England, not San Francisco (unless the first two years of one's life have that much influence) but SF is kind of faggy and European, so it counts as England. If you care to click on his website, you'll see he's also satirizing-through-immitation HTML and all those unreadable MySpace pages that people construct.

Toronto is an extremely talented and sophisticated city, and it really shines sometimes.
