Residential density, the number of people living in a given area, is one of the most important characterisitcs of urban areas. High densities create vibrant streets, support main street commercial areas, and encourage walking, biking and transit use. But how dense should our neighbourhoods be? What types of buildings create high densities? What do high density neighbourhoods look like?<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this series encourages people to look around their neighbourhood and ask: how does density affect the quality of my neighbourhood?<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">4 &#8211; Uptown Saint John, New Brunswick<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/strong><strong> <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10487\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/09\/19\/atlantic-canadas-densest-neighbourhoods-saint-john\/uptown-saint-john-map\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10487\" title=\"Uptown Saint John (map)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Uptown-Saint-John-map-600x520.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"416\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Uptown-Saint-John-map-600x520.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Uptown-Saint-John-map-300x260.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/Uptown-Saint-John-map.jpg 830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Atlantic Canada&#8217;s\u00a0fourth densest neighbourhood, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uptownsj.com\/uptownsj\/\" target=\"_blank\">Uptown Saint John<\/a>, is the office, retail and entertainment core of Canada&#8217;s first incorporated City: Saint John, New Brunswick. Dozens of blocks in Uptown are part of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintjohn.ca\/en\/home\/aboutsaintjohn\/maps\/heritagemaps\/trinity.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Trinity Royal Heritage Area<\/a>. Most buildings in the Heritage Area were\u00a0built following the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/website.nbm-mnb.ca\/CAIN\/english\/sj_fire\/\" target=\"_blank\">Great Fire of 1877<\/a>. These buildings are mostly brick townhouses, office buildings\u00a0and small apartment buildings, from the era\u00a0when Saint John was one of Canada&#8217;s largest manufacturing centres.
