Residential density, the number of people living in a given area, is one of the most important\u00a0characteristics\u00a0of urban areas. High densities create vibrant streets, support main street commercial areas, and encourage walking, biking and transit use. But how dense should our neighbourhoods be? What types of buildings create high densities? What do high density neighbourhoods look like?<\/p>\n<p>Hopefully this series encourages people to look around their neighbourhood and ask: how does density affect the quality of my neighbourhood?<\/p>\n<p>Without further ado&#8230;on to number one!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more--><br \/>\n<a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10695\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/10\/11\/atlantic-canadas-densest-neighbourhoods-spring-garden-queen-street\/south-end-halifax-map\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-10695\" title=\"south End Halifax (map)\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/south-End-Halifax-map-600x590.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/south-End-Halifax-map-600x590.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/south-End-Halifax-map-300x295.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/south-End-Halifax-map.jpg 732w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>1 &#8211; Spring Garden\/ Queen Street, Halifax, Nova Scotia<\/h2>\n<p>Atlantic Canada&#8217;s densest neighbourhood is probably also Atlantic Canada&#8217;s liveliest neighbourhood. Spring Garden Road is the busiest retail street in Atlantic Canada, with lots of activity all day and into the evening. Located near Halifax&#8217;s central business district, hospitals and universities, this neighbourhood has many shops, restaurants and offices. The many housing options include high rise condominiums, many low rise apartment buildings, 19th Century townhouses and single family homes on small lots. Most buildings have small setbacks and cover most of their lot, resulting in a high population density, especially since so many buildings are multi-unit. Very few lots in the neighbourhood are undeveloped, and several new buildings are under construction or proposed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Population Density:<\/strong> 7160 people\/ km2<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dwelling Density:<\/strong> 54 units\/ hectare<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" title=\"Argyle\"
