He cites the example of the Atlanta BeltLine, a 22-mile rail route turned linear park, as a possible model.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0At\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlanticcities.com\/design\/2011\/09\/times-square\/217\/\" target=\"_self\">The Atlantic Cities<\/a>, Allison Arieff reflects on the industrial re-design of NYC&#8217;s Times Square. Architect Craig Dykers muses, \u201cThere\u2019s that film noir quality that some people have about Times Square\u2026 and the grittiness of the street is a part of it&#8230; It\u2019s not taking its cues from pretty little things in Europe or something. It\u2019s kind of like the heart of New York City. It\u2019s a heavy, muscular thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Thieves in North Beaver Township, Pennsylvania, raised the (re-)bar this past week when they stole a 50 by 20 foot bridge for scrap metal. The bridge dated back to the early 1900s and was primarily used for rail traffic. (<a href=\"http:\/\/news.blogs.cnn.com\/2011\/10\/07\/thieves-dismantle-cart-off-steel-bridge-in-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_self\">CNN<\/a>) \u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Ross Douthat at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/10\/09\/opinion\/sunday\/douthat-up-from-ugliness.html?_r=2&amp;ref=todayspaper\" target=\"_self\">New York Times<\/a> uses Steve Jobs flair for cultivating beauty in modernity as a set of parallel instructions for the world&#8217;s city builders and policy makers: &#8220;From the Apple store to \u201cThe Incredibles,\u201d Jobs revived the romance of modernity \u2014 the assumption, shared by Victorian science-fiction writers and space-age dreamers alike, that the world of the future should be more glamorous than the present.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0The World Monuments Fund is taking care to preserve the world&#8217;s best brutalist architecture.
