We\u2019ll be on the lookout for websites outside the country that approach themes related to urban experiences and issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacingmedia.com\/uploads\/images\/line-grey-1pixel-600wide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/t4america.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/25\/events-across-the-country-last-week-bring-sense-of-urgency-to-bridge-repair\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+transportationforamerica+%28Transportation+For+America+%28All%29%29&amp;utm_content=Google+Reader\" target=\"_self\">Transportation for America<\/a> reports that communities across the U.S. are demanding repairs to aging and unsafe bridges. A staggering 9.8% of bridges in the Chicago metropolitan area are considered structurally deficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicaffairs.ubc.ca\/2011\/10\/25\/2010-winter-olympics-provided-economic-and-cultural-boost\/\" target=\"_self\">UBC School of Public Affairs<\/a> profiles a recent report on the impact of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The study used 126 IOC-mandated indicators to assess the social, economic and environmental impacts of the Games. While the reported findings are somewhat vague, researchers note that the Games \u00a0helped with the creation\u00a0of new jobs and businesses and increases in visitor spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0At<a href=\" http:\/\/americancity.org\/buzz\/entry\/3187\/\" target=\"_self\"> Next American City<\/a>, Michael Hooper examines the role of public participation in infrastructure projects. While some prominent urbanists question the value of what they term &#8216;excessive participatory requirements&#8217; &#8211; citing slower construction times, Hooper identifies other positive spillovers from public participation including\u00a0user satisfaction, long-term economic and social sustainability and the\u00a0development of social capital.<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Dutch designers Merel Sloother, Liat Azulay and Pieter Frank de Jong are showcasing their latest design: Feats per Minute is a bicycle that plays records on its\u00a0wheels as riders rolls towards their destination. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2011\/10\/09\/today-at-dezeen-platform-merel-slootheer-liat-azulay-and-pieter-frank-de-jong\/\" target=\"_self\">DeZeen<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0At\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bdonline.co.uk\/news\/gaddafis-death-prompts-go-ahead-for-libyan-construction-projects\/5026622.article\" target=\"_self\">BDOnline<\/a>, Elizabeth Hopkirk reports that Gaddafi&#8217;s death has prompted interest in Libyan development from international construction firms. But as architect Phillip Graham notes, it is too easy to make snap decisions on the country&#8217;s development trajectory at this moment.
