{"id":11343,"date":"2012-03-06T08:00:25","date_gmt":"2012-03-06T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingatlantic.ca\/?p=11343"},"modified":"2013-01-21T04:26:57","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T08:26:57","slug":"atlantic-snapshots-ironwork","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2012\/03\/06\/atlantic-snapshots-ironwork\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlantic Snapshots: Ironwork Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2012\/03\/06\/atlantic-snapshots-ironwork\/scans74\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11344\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-11344\" title=\"Ironwork\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/scans74-600x433.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"433\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/scans74-600x433.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/scans74-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/scans74-940x679.jpg 940w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/scans74.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>HALIFAX<\/strong> &#8211; Do you notice that central Halifax contains a lot of iron fences and railings?\u00a0\u00a0To the west of Citadel Hill full blocks of former Commons are surrounded by high iron railings: Camp Hill Cemetery, the Public Gardens and the Wanderers Grounds.\u00a0 This group of fences started to be installed early in the 1900s and their\u00a0plain iron uprights combine strength and transparency \u2013 keep us out but allow us to see in.\u00a0\u00a0One of the things that make the Gardens special is the fact that our entry is controlled (and we love to complain about it).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At the corner of Spring Garden and Barrington there is a beautiful group of fences 40 or 50 years older.\u00a0Those in front of the St Matthews and around the St Paul\u2019s Cemetery date from 1860 and were part of the redevelopment of the area that saw the building of the church, the courthouse and the Welsford Parker Monument.<\/p>\n<p>Further up Barrington Street, the fence around St. Paul\u2019s Church probably dates from the same period and is now in very fragile condition. These cast iron fences were probably manufactured in Nova Scotia possibly in one of the several foundries in Halifax.\u00a0\u00a0The pattern used around St. Paul\u2019s Cemetery survives in\u00a0a number of\u00a0other locations in the\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: small;\">province.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The oldest iron railing and the oldest architectural cast iron in Nova Scotia is around Province House.\u00a0\u00a0It surrounds a block of the original 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century street grid and has been in place since about 1817.\u00a0\u00a0At that time there were no foundries in Nova Scotia so this fine example of Georgian ironwork was purchased from the Carron Company in Scotland, the largest foundry in Europe.
