HALIFAX<\/strong> \u2014 As the debate rages regarding new urban\u00a0developments\u00a0such as Skye Halifax and the new Halifax YMCA, questions have arisen over the relevancy of \u00a0HRM by Design<\/a>, Halifax’s own community-consulted planning document for the downtown region.<\/p>\n

Dalhousie\u2019s School of Planning is presenting a (timely) student-run conference,\u00a0SHIFT 2012<\/a><\/em>. A place to engage with urban planning practitioners, urban design enthusiasts and people just generally interested in shifting the cultural debate around peninsular Halifax.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

With a number of featured events taking place, the conference’s keynote is also the 11th<\/sup>\u00a0Annual Carmichael Lecture featuring Majora Carter<\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0MacArthur winning activist and an urban planning visionary who connects the dots between urban renewal and\u00a0environmental\u00a0justice.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat cities need public engagement,\u201d said\u00a0Paul MacKinnon<\/a>, Executive Director of\u00a0DHBC<\/a>. \u201cThis year\u2019s Dalhousie University conference and Carmichael Lecture is about harnessing the great ideas that our citizens have, and moving them from grassroots to the upper echelons of decision-making. With the upcoming economic opportunities and challenges, HRM\u2019s Regional Plan and civic election in the fall, it is more important than ever for Haligonians to get engaged.\u201d<\/p>\n

So, let’s go get engaged, let’s go explore, let’s go debate…it’s time to take part in the Shift <\/em>taking place in our communities.<\/p>\n
