Commonly called the Sanzhi UFO houses, they were a type of the <a href=\"http:\/\/eng.archinform.net\/projekte\/13944.htm\">rare<\/a>, prefabricated <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Futuro_house\">Futuro<\/a> house style built in the late &#8217;70s. The buildings were intended to be a waterfront resort aimed primarily at American visitors, but construction was never completed. Rumours permiated that the work was halted when the site was found to contain the skeletons of up to <a href=\"http:\/\/observers.france24.com\/content\/20080922-taiwan-deserted-ufo-houses-architecture\">20,000 17th century Dutch soldiers<\/a>, which led to stories of murders and hauntings at the site.<\/p>\n<p>Construction was set to continue again in 1989 with a $24-million-backed plan to complete the resort, but the plans quickly fell through over the contrary visions of the developers and financiers, and the UFO houses were left to decay again.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.taipeitimes.com\/News\/taiwan\/archives\/2009\/01\/29\/2003434810\">buildings were finally demolished in 2009<\/a> to make way for a more &#8220;normal&#8221; looking resort and <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.ca\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=zh-TW&amp;u=http:\/\/www.appledaily.com.tw\/appledaily\/article\/headline\/20100314\/32360104&amp;prev=\/search%3Fq%3D%25E9%25A3%259B%25E7%25A2%259F%25E5%25B1%258B%25E5%2589%25B7%25E5%25B9%25B3%2B%25E4%25B8%2589%25E8%258A%259D%25E9%2597%25A2%25E6%25B0%25B4%25E4%25B8%258A%25E6%25A8%2582%25E5%259C%2592%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3DeJq%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-GB:official%26prmd%3Dimvns&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=YQn9T5Z5icLRAf6grL0G&amp;ved=0CFgQ7gEwAQ\">water park<\/a>.
