Unfortunately, if you\u2019re heading to Quinpool on\u00a0a bike, you might have a bit of trouble finding a place to lock it up.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you have the standard telephone polls and other road signs, but these can\u2019t really accommodate higher volumes of\u00a0cyclists. If we truly want to encourage people to move towards more sustainable urban lifestyles, we need to ensure that some of the\u00a0simple infrastructure needed to make this a convenient transition for people is in place.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Karla Nicholson, general manager of <a href=\"\u201dhttp:\/\/www.quinpoolroad.ca\/\u201d\">Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association<\/a>, says that her organization is aware of the problem: \u201c[The] Association&#8217;s board members and I spent a great deal of time working closely with HRM staff\u00a0to have a major streetscape project done for Quinpool Road, with a proposed starting date of September 2009. Additional bike racks were in that plan, as well as providing\u00a0a shared bike lane from Monastery Lane\u00a0to Robie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The problem, says Nicholson, is that to make the streetscape plan financially viable HRM and the Quinpool Road Mainstreet District Association needed to get additional funding from the federal and provincial governments. For whatever reason the Province and the Feds just weren&#8217;t willing to cough up the dough.<\/p>\n<p>All hope is not lost however; Nicholson says that her organization is working with other Halifax business districts \u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.springgardenroad.com\/\">Spring Garden<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downtownhalifax.ns.ca\/\"> Downtown Halifax<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.downtowndartmouth.ca\/\">Downtown Dartmouth<\/a>\u2014 in the hopes of figuring out a way to get funding for streetscape projects.<\/p>\n<p>She also said that since the streetscape project is stalled for the time being \u2014 and presumably because the issue is getting a bit of media attention here \u2014 she will consult her board and HRM about possibly installing more bike racks on Quinpool.
