HALIFAX – <\/strong>This past<\/span> Saturday<\/span><\/span>, the\u00a0Africville\u00a0Genealogy\u00a0Society<\/a> announced that\u00a0Halifax Regional Municipality has offered a three<\/span> million dollar\u00a0compensation package\u00a0to the former community of\u00a0Africville<\/a>. \u00a0Yesterday the federal government contributed an additional $250,000 towards the creation of the Africville Heritage Trust.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Africville, a small community settled in the 1840s\u00a0on the shores of the Bedford Basin, was home to approximately 80 African-Nova Scotian families. \u00a0It was demolished one house at a time in the 1960s in the name of integration, urban renewal and the construction of the Mackay Bridge. \u00a0The former Africville site is now the location of a highway interchange and Seaview Memorial Park,\u00a0an off-leash dog walking area<\/a>. \u00a0Overlooking the site are the Mont Blanc townho<\/a>uses<\/a>. \u00a0The proposed interpretative centre and church replica would be built on the northwestern section of these lands.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

This announcement has been a long time coming. \u00a0The pressure has been building for years. \u00a0It was 1991 when Deputy Premier Tom McInnis first promised that a replica of the Seaview Baptist Church would be rebuilt. \u00a0The\u00a0United Nations recommended that HRM grant reparations<\/a> in 2004.<\/p>\n
