Tuesday marked the 225th anniversary of the incorporation of Canada&#8217;s &#8216;original city&#8217;; Commercial Properties presented\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rogerllewis\/4621606855\/\">a town clock<\/a> at the corner of King &amp; Prince William streets, with organizers putting on a gala celebration at Harbour Station marking the beginning of an eight month extravaganza.<\/p>\n<p>The day before the festivities, marked the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com\/city\/article\/1055420\">beginning<\/a> of $35 million worth of construction work on the Saint John Harbour Bridge.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sjwaterfront.com\/saint_john_waterfront_development__projects\/harbour_passage.html\">Harbour Passage<\/a>, the pedestrian route between the North End and West Side of the city and Uptown, is to be effectively closed this summer, autumn &amp; next year (<a href=\"http:\/\/picasaweb.google.com\/saintjohnwaterfrontdevelopment\/HarbourPassage02#\">photos here<\/a>). See you in 2012!<img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At a community information session held 4 days before construction started, dozens of Saint John citizens took aim at the plan to strip away their recreational and commuter use of the Passage.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com\/city\/article\/1048903\">Overflowing<\/a> with voices asking for a safe alternative route, Ken Anthony, general manager of the bridge authority, said they&#8217;ve been working with the City and the Waterfront Development Corporation towards a route &#8220;that&#8217;s number one, not too inconvenient and number two, is still fairly safe from traffic&#8221;. Nevertheless, the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saintjohn.ca\/harbourbridge-walk.cfm\">Alternative Route<\/a> suggests that safety from traffic wasn&#8217;t a priority issue. Local business owner Jeff Roach&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.familyroach.com\/vital-link-our-only-link\">blog post<\/a> takes a look at this. How safe would you feel biking on\/walking along a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=main+street,+saint+john,+nb&amp;sll=41.52313,-87.486938&amp;sspn=0.035922,0.077162&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Main+St,+St+John,+New+Brunswick,+Canada&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=45.276582,-66.067742&amp;panoid=qgwBrE1Djb5XMBd3WjW9eA&amp;cbp=12,127.57,,0,4.6&amp;ll=45.276582,-66.067742&amp;spn=0.001055,0.002411&amp;z=19\">highway<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Although the transformation of Main Street into a 6 lane\u00a0through-way took place decades ago, it continues to separate The North End &amp; West Side neighbourhoods from Uptown; the Harbour Passage was a (partial) successful remediation. I suggest partial, only on the hopes that\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=main+street,+saint+john,+nb&amp;sll=41.52313,-87.486938&amp;sspn=0.035922,0.077162&amp;g=main+street,+saint+john&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Main+St,+St+John,+New+Brunswick,+Canada&amp;ll=45.276389,-66.07046&amp;spn=0.001063,0.002411&amp;z=19&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=45.276672,-66.069661&amp;panoid=tmXZZEBI9QoY5QRl-gHvng&amp;cbp=12,68.7,,0,2.7\">Main Street<\/a> (the highway) is transformed back into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/new-brunswick.net\/Saint_John\/historic\/pics\/p11-24n.jpg\">Main Street<\/a> (the original).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m certain various alternatives such as safety nets under the bridge were considered and yet not implemented; if there was a highway running below the bridge, would we get the same result? A minor\u00a0inconvenience\u00a0this is not&#8230; it&#8217;s closing for two years, and even then the vocal outrage was somehow &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/telegraphjournal.canadaeast.com\/opinion\/article\/1050739\">unexpected<\/a>&#8216;?
