A place where our paths intersect.  Last weekend the Common served that same function, but on a much greater scale.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.membertou400.com\/\">Mawio&#8217;mi Grand Chief Membertou 400<\/a> brought together over 6,000 people &#8211; including many Aboriginals from across Canada who travelled great distances to participate in the ceremonies.  It was the largest powwow that had ever taken place in Atlantic Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fzuQCQTvsBI&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><embed type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"425\" height=\"344\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fzuQCQTvsBI&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1?rel=0\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object>]<\/p>\n<p>The 4 day-long event included <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZsngIuloTeY\">drumming<\/a> and dancing competitions, a free Buffy Sainte-Marie concert, knowledge sharing, free food and the temporary installation of over 15 wigwams throughout the park.  There were also a number of people who camped with their families on the North Common.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Tents on the Common by Spacing Magazine, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/4748556036\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4093\/4748556036_cce4864e68.jpg\" alt=\"Tents on the Common\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mini tent-city on the Common!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><!--more-->With the addition of a working fountain and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/brownie07\/4735230545\/\">improved lighting at nighttime<\/a>, the park was practically unrecognizable.  Or better yet, it was a well-executed example of what the Halifax Common could and should look like, successfully serving its purpose as a accessible public space where communities can come to gather.  Without an admission charge.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"WigWam by Spacing Magazine, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/4748530196\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\" Baseball diamond reimagined.\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4135\/4748530196_08a8f31ca3.jpg\" alt=\"WigWam\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"> Baseball diamond reimagined.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Clumsily, on the other side of the park, preparation is beginning for events of a different sort.  The controversial Concerts on the Common, a showcase of once-popular (in some cases never popular!) imported musicians, are right around the corner.  A small building is under construction that will house a permanent power supply that will accompany the yet-to-be-built &#8220;special events plaza&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Power Supply by Spacing Magazine, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacing\/4752286726\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4114\/4752286726_83f413b0c8.jpg\" alt=\"Power Supply\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Construction begins on the power supply building.  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As I watch the Common become permanently altered to accommodate the for-profit &#8216;mega&#8217; concerts, I can&#8217;t help but be reminded of how the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediacoop.ca\/story\/3054\">public was left out of the design process<\/a>.
