{"id":573,"date":"2009-10-26T10:38:05","date_gmt":"2009-10-26T13:38:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingatlantic.ca\/?p=573"},"modified":"2013-01-21T04:50:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T08:50:36","slug":"another-kind-of-crosswalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2009\/10\/26\/another-kind-of-crosswalk\/","title":{"rendered":"Another kind of crosswalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2697\/4036505580_8b2d2a8c19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>SAINT JOHN<\/strong> &#8211; Besides admiring the beautifully designed <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2009\/10\/14\/better-bus-shelter-design-in-downtown-saint-john\/\">bus shelters<\/a>, while visiting Saint John over thanksgiving weekend I spent a lot of time moving around the city by foot, and what caught my attention were some of their crosswalks.\u00a0 Rather than the <a href=\"http:\/\/cdn.wn.com\/ph\/\/2009\/06\/24\/02b0464597a73fabdfe5a5a3e155934b-grande.jpg\">standard solid block lines<\/a> found in most cities (Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, etc.), some of Saint John&#8217;s crosswalks were stenciled brick patterns.<\/p>\n<p>While these are pretty gimmicky-looking, and are clearly calling out for tourists&#8211;many were strategically placed near the landing docks and on the most historical streets; see photo below&#8211; they do raise the interesting question of what kind of public art we allow on the streets.\u00a0 Joshua Biggley dug into the politics of art in public spaces in <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2009\/10\/20\/the-art-of-public-art\/\">his last post on Charlottetown<\/a>, showing how municipally approved art often cause controversy because it ostensibly symbolizes the approval of the greater public.\u00a0 Yet what about the kind of art that we passively accept on our streets, and is allowed precisely because it doesn&#8217;t challenge anything or push any boundaries?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a problem to think that all public art should have to conform to the tastes of the general public.\u00a0 Public art shouldn&#8217;t be about avoiding conflict, but should instead be about injecting individuality and difference onto common spaces, creating unexpected experiences that can potentially unsettle those who have grown accustomed or become dulled to a certain urban space.\u00a0 Sometimes we call these art forms vandalism; other times, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/cah\/PublicArt.html\">the work of City Hall\u2013approved artists<\/a>. In my mind, stenciling gets at the heart of this tension, making Saint John&#8217;s crosswalks particularly thought provoking.<\/p>\n<p>Take <a href=\"http:\/\/www.banksy.co.uk\/outdoors\/horizontal_1.htm\">Banksy&#8217;s work<\/a> all over the world.\u00a0 Once an arrested street vandal whose works were painted over only days after they would go up; now a world phenomenon whose murals are municipally protected landmarks and whose prints go for <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/entertainment\/6340109.stm\">hundreds of thousands of pounds at Sotheby&#8217;s<\/a> in London.<\/p>\n<p>Or for a more local example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadsworth.com\/main\/index.php?showimage=163&amp;category=2\">a different kind of stenciled crosswalk<\/a> was done in Montreal by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadsworth.com\/main\/index.php?x=page&amp;title=BIO\">Roadsworth<\/a>, an artist who went out in the middle of the night to do his work, only to have it removed soon after.\u00a0 Although shaped like a footprint, his crosswalk was still clearly a crosswalk, just like the spray-painted brick in Saint John.\u00a0 Yet I&#8217;m betting those bricks weren&#8217;t sprayed on during the middle of the night, or that the guy doing it wasn&#8217;t constantly glancing over his shoulder for cops.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/films.nfb.ca\/roadsworth\/\">neat video documenting Roadsworth&#8217;s troubles with the law<\/a> and the particularly interesting nature of the politics behind public art.\u00a0 Definitely sheds some light on how an otherwise unexciting piece of urban design can actually be a politically symbolic act.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2511\/4036535084_29ab21f2f7.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>photos by Jake Schabas<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SAINT JOHN &#8211; Besides admiring the beautifully designed bus shelters, while visiting Saint John over thanksgiving weekend I spent a lot of time moving around the city by foot, and what caught my attention were some of their crosswalks.\u00a0 Rather than the standard solid block lines found in most cities (Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, etc.), some<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2009\/10\/26\/another-kind-of-crosswalk\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"sr-only\">&#8220;Another kind of crosswalk&#8221;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4071,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_ef_editorial_meta_paragraph_assignment":"","_ef_editorial_meta_date_first-draft-date":"","_ef_editorial_meta_checkbox_needs-photo":"","_ef_editorial_meta_number_word-count":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5861,344,335],"tags":[599,355,497,351,503,674,671,382,369,673,353,670,672,556,381],"class_list":["post-573","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-culture","category-politics","category-streetscape","tag-artist","tag-charlottetown","tag-city-hall","tag-halifax","tag-jake-schabas","tag-joshua-biggley","tag-london","tag-montreal","tag-public-art","tag-roadsworth","tag-saint-john","tag-saint-johns","tag-sothebys","tag-thanksgiving","tag-toronto"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.5 -
