You can learn more about   the archives and explore thousands of photos, textual records, maps,   art, and more on <a href=\"http:\/\/gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/\">their website<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of the finest surviving examples of Victorian Gardens in North  America, the Halifax Public Gardens began on Common land by the Nova  Scotia Horticultural Society in 1836. (Text from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxpublicgardens.ca\/m_2.asp\">Friends of the Historic Public Gardens<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifax.ca\/publicgardens\/index.html\">HRM<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/s845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/?action=view&amp;current=7.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/7.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Plan\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Public Gardens Plan, ca. 1954<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Society&#8217;s aims were to establish a garden to promote an interest in botany and proper horticultural technique &#8211; &#8220;to improve the culture of the best kinds of fruit, the most useful vegetables, shrubs trees, and choice flowers,&#8221; while at the same time providing a delightful retreat for the citizens.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=687\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/1-2.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Public Gardens\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Public Gardens ca. 1879<\/em><\/p>\n<p>About 1841, the site chosen for the new garden was then part of the Halifax common, and now comprises the southern half of the Public Gardens. The space was fenced and laid out in flower beds and vegetable plots. It became a resort for all the wealth and fashion of the time, with military bands furnishing music on fete days and holidays. The Society strove to become self-sufficient by selling vegetables and flowers. In1848, Horticultural Hall was built to accommodate meetings of the Society, and had a frost-proof cellar to protect vegetables stored through the winter.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxpublicgardens.ca\/s_32.asp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxpublicgardens.ca\/pictures\/Bandstand%20-%20Ladies%20walking.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"512\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em><br \/>\nStrolling by the Bandstand, ca. 1880s<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1866, Alderman John MacCulloch directed gardener Michael Shea to lay out a flower bed north of the Horticultural Gardens in the vicinity of &#8220;the lake&#8221; &#8211; now called Griffin&#8217;s Pond &#8211; based on a plan Alderman MacCulloch had seen while on a visit to Paris.  And in 1867 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Young_%28politician%29\">Sir William Young<\/a>, Chief Justice of the province, opened the two-acre City Garden Plot to an appreciative public.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=706\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/2-1.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"George Brown\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Champion oarsman <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sportshall.ca\/accessible\/hm_profile.php?i=327\">George Brown<\/a> on the Gardens&#8217; pond, ca. 1870<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A second series of gardens was established by the City of Halifax in 1867 and in 1874 the gardens were unified into the present 16 acres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=483\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/3.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Bandstand\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Posing with installations, ca. 1890s<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 1872, Richard Power was hired as <a href=\"http:\/\/gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=692\">the Garden\u2019s superintendent<\/a>.  Under his supervision, the Gardens saw many of the linden and elm trees  along Summer and Sackville Streets that still exist today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/halifax\/archives.asp?ID=77\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/4.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Jubilee\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>School children at unveiling of fountain, Public Gardens, Halifax, Jubilee week, ca. 1897<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Power remained the superintendent until 1915, and during that period he oversaw the introduction of the bandstand, the fountains, statues and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.halifaxpublicgardens.ca\/s_8.asp\">wrought iron gates<\/a> \u2013 all fundamental features of the High Victorian Pleasure Garden and all honouring a milestone in Queen Victoria\u2019s reign, a contemporary military event, or an important local personage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=303\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/11.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gates\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Iron wrought gates, ca. 1908<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.ns.ca\/nsarm\/virtual\/notman\/archives.asp?ID=693\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i845.photobucket.com\/albums\/ab18\/nsarm\/10.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"Gates\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>South Park Street Gate, ca. 1890s<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the Gardens the trees, shrubs and flowers are planted as separate specimens. The Gardens are filled with many exotic and semi-tropical species enriched by colour and texture.
