We\u2019ll be on the lookout for websites outside the country that approach themes related to urban experiences and issues.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Londoners got<em> <\/em>their first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/commentisfree\/2009\/nov\/03\/oxford-circus-x-crossing-roundabout\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;X crossing&#8221; this week at Oxford Circle<\/a>, one of the city&#8217;s busiest downtown intersections. <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/wire\/2009\/10\/12\/new-pedestrian-scramble-takes-a-right-turn\/\" target=\"_self\">For Torontonians<\/a> who want to compare, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/local\/london\/hi\/people_and_places\/newsid_8337000\/8337673.stm\" target=\"_self\">BBC News has a great slide show<\/a> of London&#8217;s version of the pedestrian scramble.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <span>On the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/id\/2234011\/\" target=\"_self\">Slate blog<\/a>, Tom Vanderbilt looks at jaywalking as part of city life, arguing that the risks are minimal and that <\/span>&#8220;waiting for a signal when no cars are in sight [is] ridiculous and anti-urban&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Bologna, Italy may soon be home to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.designboom.com\/weblog\/cat\/9\/view\/8039\/massimo-iosa-ghini-energy-belt-bologna-italy.html\" target=\"_self\">sleek 5084 meter<em> solar-powered <\/em>monorail system<\/a>. Designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iosaghini.it\/\" target=\"_self\">Ghini Associati<\/a>, the &#8220;Energy Belt&#8221;, which would user solar energy captured from photovoltaic panels at each station and along the track&#8217;s southwest side, is being proposed as a quick transit route from the main train station in Bologna to the airport.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 The Los Angeles cyclist community is hoping to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-cyclists-trial1-2009nov01,0,2835513,full.story\" target=\"_self\">&#8220;justice system&#8217;s commitment to protecting the rights of bike riders&#8221;<\/a> as the now infamous assault trial of Dr. Christopher Thompson finishes up its third week<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/local\/la-me-cyclists-trial1-2009nov01,0,2835513,full.story\" target=\"_self\">.<\/a> Thompson is on trial after pulling in front of two cyclists (with whom he been exchanging nasty words) and slamming on his brakes. The two cyclists suffered from severe injuries&#8211;cyclist Patrick Watson went face first into Thompson&#8217;s rear widow and cyclist Josh Crosby was propelled onto the pavement. While Thompson claims he didn&#8217;t intend to hurt the cyclists <a href=\"http:\/\/bikinginla.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/30\/evil-on-trial-dr-christopher-thomson-denies-all-in-the-mandeville-canyon-case\/\" target=\"_self\">the case has become a rallying cry for the city&#8217;s bike community<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/mumbai.thecityfix.com\/tata-gives-india-the-worlds-cheapest-home-but-what-does-that-mean-for-cities\/\" target=\"_self\">The City Fix Mumbai Blog<\/a> looks at what &#8220;the world&#8217;s cheapest home&#8221; could mean for urban India.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tata.com\/\" target=\"_self\">The Tata Group<\/a> (the company behind <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/consumer\/story\/2008\/01\/10\/nano-tata.html\" target=\"_self\">Nano car<\/a>) is currently building 1, 000 units of the 390,00 rupee (US$8,500), 283 square-foot home outside Mumbai.<\/p>\n<p><em>photo by Mike Roberts<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Each week we will be focusing on blogs from around the world dealing specifically with urban environments.
