Band members died of starvation due to\u00a0buffalo depletion,\u00a0others\u00a0took M\u00e9tis scrip, and some joined the Enoch Band (which, interesting to note, had access to the river). Shortly after in 1888, it\u00a0became<span style=\"color: #252525;\">\u00a0the first reserve to be surrendered to the federal government for immigrant settlement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #252525;\">As a reminder of a cultural\u00a0landscape where Edmontonians continue to benefit today from the reserve system and its complicated past, neighbourhood names in South Mill Woods are Cree in origin:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ekota: meaning\u00a0&#8220;a special place.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Kameyosek: meaning\u00a0&#8220;the beautiful.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Meyonohk: meaning\u00a0&#8220;in a good spot.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Meyokumin: meaning &#8220;good water.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Menisa: meaning &#8220;berry.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Sakaw: meaning\u00a0&#8220;wooded area.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Satoo: named after Chief Satoo,\u00a0meaning\u00a0&#8220;jumping.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Tawa: meaning &#8220;you are welcome.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Tipaskan: meaning &#8220;reserve.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p>Michael Mooney, executive director of the Urban Development Institute, said at one time the naming committee forced developers to accept historic names that the developers didn&#8217;t want.<\/p>\n<p>The Cree names in south Mill Woods, such as Meyonohk and Kameyosek, are examples.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The developers argued strongly, saying it was just not marketable,&#8221; said Mooney.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They said, &#8216;You&#8217;re giving us names that nobody can remember; they don&#8217;t know where it is.
