{"id":6444,"date":"2015-09-17T07:30:59","date_gmt":"2015-09-17T13:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/?p=6444"},"modified":"2015-09-17T01:19:19","modified_gmt":"2015-09-17T07:19:19","slug":"event-sept-18-parking-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/2015\/09\/17\/event-sept-18-parking-day\/","title":{"rendered":"EVENT Sept 18: PARK(ing) Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>WHAT:<\/strong> Come join us in the transformation of parking stalls into temporary public spaces on Edmonton&#8217;s Second Annual PARK(ing) Day!<br \/>\n<strong>WHEN:\u00a0<\/strong>Friday, September\u00a018th. 12-6PM<br \/>\n<strong>WHERE:\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/drawingroomedmonton.com\/parkingday2015\/\">Parklets hosted by the Drawing Room<\/a>: Intersection of 97 (Nam\u00eaw) Street and Okisikow Way (101a Avenue);\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/870444766358711\/\">Isaak Kornelsen Memorial Parklet<\/a>:\u00a010844 Whyte Ave (for more information on the memorial, <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/2014\/08\/05\/vision-realized-isaak-kornelsen-memorial-parklet\/\">click here<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>PARK(ing) Day\u00a0will take place again on Okisikow Way (101a Avenue), Cree for\u00a0&#8220;Spirit Woman&#8221;, and it has also\u00a0expanded to 97 (<a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/2014\/04\/01\/lake-sturgeon-nemew-buffalo-water\/\">Nam\u00eaw<\/a>) Street. We bring attention to\u00a0Okisikow, whose street name was granted\u00a0in 2011 to raise awareness of\u00a0the Angel Street\u00a0Initiative from\u00a0Iqaluit. The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bmcnews.org\/story\/angel-way-named\">name\u00a0honours all women<\/a> who have experienced violence while\u00a0providing\u00a0a more positive and hopeful image for women and children as it leads\u00a0towards the women&#8217;s emergency centre.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers\u00a0aim to\u00a0empower people to co-create safe, inspiring and inclusive urban places in the Boyle Street neighbourhood. This year, we hope to catalyze conversation at the intersection of geography and culture while strengthening a shared sense of belonging to this place. Participants were asked, \u201cHow might public spaces better accommodate and celebrate the diverse people that live here?\u201d Participants embraced the challenge by submitting proposals that engage passersby, get creative with urban design, and celebrate diversity.<\/p>\n<p>This event is presented by <a href=\"http:\/\/drawingroomedmonton.com\/\">The Drawing Room<\/a> in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/city_lab\/citylab-current-upcoming-projects.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">CITYlab<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crsc.ualberta.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">City Region Studies Centre<\/a>.
