Consider the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/edmonton\/mike-bhatnagar-gives-a-tour-of-the-mysterious-tunnel-under-the-hat-1.3006520\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tunnel under Jasper Avenue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.ca\/maps\/place\/Edmonton,+AB\/@53.4937385,-113.5188301,3a,60y,310.12h,87.52t\/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sXjDLh3tkySTH2SoT4PraJw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x53a0224580deff23:0x411fa00c4af6155d!8m2!3d53.544389!4d-113.4909267!6m1!1e1?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">garage castle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the fact that the clock on the City Hall tower wasn\u2019t designed to be read at night. While some mysteries are best left unexplained, it&#8217;s time resolve a question that has puzzled Edmontonians for decades: how do you pronounce Muttart?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/attractions_events\/muttart-conservatory.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muttart Conservatory<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been one of Edmonton\u2019s best-loved landmarks since opening in 1976. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.muttart.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muttart Foundation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been doing philanthropic work for over 60 years. Earlier this year the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/city_government\/documents\/Meeting%20Minutes_01_January_26_2016.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naming Committee designated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a road planned as part of a development south of Stadium LRT station as Muttart Crossing and two adjacent future plazas as Gladys Muttart and Merrill Muttart parks. And in 2020 or 2021 there will be a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/transedlrt.ca\/route-map\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muttart LRT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stop. In other words, we will be saying M-u-t-t-a-r-t more often as time goes on. It only makes sense that we arrive at a common understanding of how to say it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The name goes way back in Canadian history. Balthazar Moutarde was born in the region of Alsace in 1738. Alsace was then under French rule but Balthazar\u2019s native language was probably German. His surname, which means mustard in French, may have been a corruption of Mothart. He crossed the ocean and was a stonecutter at Louisbourg when the British captured it in 1758. He deftly switched sides and fought on the Plains of Abraham under General Wolfe the following year. After the Treaty of Paris, he married and in 1769 obtained land on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. John&#8217;s Island, aka <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prince Edward Island. There the Moutarde surname anglicized into Muttart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Balthazar\u2019s great-great-grandson Samson Muttart and his wife Alma moved their family from PEI to Edmonton in 1903. Samson, a carpenter, established a construction company with his brother Benjamin. Muttart Brothers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QTKW0AibST0\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">timed the market perfectly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as house building and other construction expanded rapidly in an exuberant economy. Ultimately, the company built over 400 homes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7053\" style=\"width: 290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7053\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/11\/nc-6-895.jpg\" alt=\"Muttart Block, 1914. Photo credit: Glenbow Archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1912, on a lot on Namayo Avenue (97 Street) where the Muttarts had previously lived, Samson built the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1912\/11\/29\/9\/Ar00906.html?query=newspapers%7C%22mutart+building%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cscore\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muttart Block<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as a symbol of the family\u2019s early success. Five storeys tall, it had shops on the main floor and offices and residences above. Here <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1913\/04\/24\/7\/Ar00704.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welshmen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sang songs of home and organized a soccer team, children learned <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1913\/04\/24\/3\/Ar00315.html?query=newspapers%7C%22kate+webb%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cscore\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">music<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, society dresses were <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1914\/02\/20\/13\/Ad01302_10.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sewn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an international pandemic <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1918\/11\/08\/4\/Ar00415.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a husband and father, a car was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1918\/11\/27\/2\/Ad00202_2.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stolen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1919\/11\/15\/11\/Ar01105.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">union organizing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurred, a rubbish chute <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1920\/09\/18\/10\/Ar01002.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">caught fire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a pedestrian was <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/peel.library.ualberta.ca\/newspapers\/EDB\/1921\/06\/10\/3\/Ar00320.html?query=newspapers%7C%22Muttart+Block%22%7C%28publication%3AEDB%29%7Cdate-asc\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injured<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and countless other nameless, unremembered acts in the drama of the city took place. In 1929, after the Muttarts sold the building, it was converted into the Ritz Hotel. Over time the Ritz lost whatever glitz it started out with. Canada Post built its main Edmonton depot just west of the hotel in the 1960s. In 1975 the lovely old building was ignominiously demolished to make way for an expanded loading bay for the post office, itself now replaced by the new Royal Alberta Museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7057\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7057\" style=\"width: 504px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7057\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/edmonton\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2016\/11\/Muttarts.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Gladys Muttart and Merrill Muttart. With the help of his father, Samson&#8217;s son Merrill established the M D Muttart Lumber Company in 1927. The company survived the Great Depression in part by obtaining the contract to demolish the aging <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/activities_parks_recreation\/parks_rivervalley\/borden-park-history.aspx\">rollercoaster in Borden Park<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0It took the ride apart piece by piece and resold the lumber. After World War II, Merrill and his wife Gladys built low-cost housing across Alberta and Saskatchewan under the eponymous Gladmer Developments banner. Merrill was one of Edmonton\u2019s most prominent business people, with dozens of companies in a vertically integrated construction enterprise. &#8220;Swept with depression\u201d when diagnosed with diabetes in 1932, Gladys went on to become a founder and energetic organizer of the Canadian Diabetes Association. She eventually received an honourary doctorate from Mount Allison University for her advocacy efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Muttart family continues to influence Edmonton. The foundation they established donated $1 million towards the conservatory that bears their name, helped make the University of Alberta a leading centre of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adi.ualberta.ca\/en\/AboutADI\/Timeline.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and today focuses on strengthening the charitable sector and on early childhood education and care. Gladys and Merrill\u2019s son-in-law Ted Mildon was instrumental in the construction of the Coliseum (formerly Rexall Place), the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edmonton.ca\/projects_plans\/northlands\/coliseum-transformation.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">transformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of which into a recreation facility is now being considered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aware of none of this history when I was growing up in Edmonton, I variously called our local version of the Pyramids of Giza the \u201cMoo-tart\u201d or \u201cMew-tart\u201d Conservatory. Thinking the Muttart family would be party to the most authoritative pronunciation of the name, I contacted Lloyd Mildon, an affable grandson of Merrill and Gladys and owner of Muttart Industries. Admitting that it is an uncommon name, Lloyd told me that:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The correct pronunciation is ma-tart. The first syllable is soft while the second has just a tiny bit more emphasis&#8230;on the last \u201ct&#8221;. The two syllables are also spoken quite quickly so that it\u2019s not MA-tart or ma-TART but rather ma-tart\u2026and they run right into each other.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good example of this would be the word \u201cImpart\u201d. It\u2019s a two syllable word, (im-part) but both syllables are given equal emphasis and are pronounced so quickly they almost sound like one. So, if you say Muttart like that\u2026you have got it!<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So \u201cma-tart,\u201d or \u201cmuh-tart\u201d if you wish, is how the Muttarts pronounce the name.
