Photos and article by Mary Soderstrom.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vehiculepress.com\/cgi-bin\/dbman2\/db.cgi?db=default&amp;uid=default&amp;ID=*&amp;mh=10&amp;sb=3&amp;so=ascend&amp;view_records=View%2BRecords&amp;keyword=mary+soderstrom&amp;Genre=\">Mary  Soderstrom <\/a>is the author of <strong>Making Waves: The Continuing Portuguese   Adventure <\/strong>as well as <strong>The Walkable City: From Haussmann&#8217;s Boulevards to   Jane Jacobs&#8217; Streets and Beyond<\/strong>, both from V\u00e9hicule Press.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rain glistened on the granite last week, but the words of 12  Portuguese writers shone though the bad weather, even triumphing over  graffiti left by taggers.<\/p>\n<p>The words&#8211;short quotations in Portuguese with French translations&#8211;are a  unique tribute to a culture that changed the world five centuries ago  and changed Montreal much more recently. \u00a0They are engraved on a dozen granite benches on St. Lawrence boulevard, a  joint project of the city of Montreal, the Institut Cam\u00f5es and other  groups. \u00a0The series was inaugurated on the 35th anniversary of the  Carnation Revolution, that spontaneous upraising on April 25, 1974 which  saw the Portuguese sweep away five decades of dictatorship practically  without bloodshed.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10023\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/04\/25\/mark-the-anniversary-of-a-peaceful-revolution-with-a-literary-walk-through-montreals-bairro-portugues\/brancoquental\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10023\" title=\"brancoquental\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancoquental.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"80\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancoquental.jpg 600w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancoquental-300x48.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10022\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10022\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10022\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/04\/25\/mark-the-anniversary-of-a-peaceful-revolution-with-a-literary-walk-through-montreals-bairro-portugues\/brancobocage\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10022\" title=\"brancobocage\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancobocage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"347\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancobocage.jpg 500w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/brancobocage-300x208.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10022\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two azulejos--Portuguese ceramic tiles--by Montreal artist Joseph Branco, are among the dozen that grace the granite benches commemorating great Portuguese writers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Each bench is decorated with ceramic tiles by Quebec artists of    Portuguese origin. The first bench sits on the east side of the Main,  near Bagg Street. \u00a0It commemorates <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Dom Diniz<\/span> (1261-1325), the poet  monarch of the young kingdom which had just shaken off several centuries  of Muslim rule.<\/p>\n<p>From there the series passes through the centuries \u00a0as it follows St.  Lawrence north. Portugal&#8217;s bard <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Lu\u00eds de Cam\u00f5es<\/span> (c 1524-1580) is  represented with &#8220;<em>E se mais mondo houver\u00e1, l\u00e1 chegara<\/em>&#8220;&#8211;&#8220;if there were  another world, they would have found it.&#8221; Fitting words, from the author  of an epic about how the Portuguese led Europeans in the exploration of  the world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Ant\u00f3nio Vieira<\/span> (1608-1697), a Jesuit priest, the grandson of an African  woman and considered one of the greatest stylist of the Portuguese  language, is featured as is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">E\u00e7a de Queiros<\/span> (1845-1900) who spent time in  Montreal as a diplomat. \u00a0&#8220;Montreal is a little city that one would like  to display on a shelf, It doesn&#8217;t have streets, but a succession of  gardens, and that enchants me,&#8221; E\u00e7a de Queiros wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Azorean poet <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Antero de Quental <\/span>(1842-18910) as well as the enigmatic  20th century literary cult figure <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Fernando Pessoa<\/span> (1888-1935) have their  benches also. \u00a0So does Nobel \u00a0prize-winner Jos\u00e9 Saramago (1922-2010)  whose words resonate with many people in Quebec: \u00a0&#8220;Today a language that  does not defend itself, dies.&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A people that reads will never be a people of slaves,&#8221; reads the last  bench, honoring<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Ant\u00f3nio Lobo Antunes<\/span> (1942-) It is found next to the  Parc du Portugal, a little square set aside by the city of Montreal in  the late 19th century. \u00a0It got its present name in 1975 at a time when  the Portuguese had put their stamp on the neighborhood.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10025\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10025\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10025\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/04\/25\/mark-the-anniversary-of-a-peaceful-revolution-with-a-literary-walk-through-montreals-bairro-portugues\/parcduportual\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10025\" title=\"parcduportual\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/parcduportual.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/parcduportual.jpg 500w, https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2011\/04\/parcduportual-224x300.jpg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The little square off St. Lawrence was named Parc du Portugal by the city of Montreal in 1975 in honour of the Portuguese community&#39;s contribution to the city. The Plateau would not be what it is today had not Portuguese immgrants lovingly rebuilt the aging housing stock in the neighborhood.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-10025\" href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/04\/25\/mark-the-anniversary-of-a-peaceful-revolution-with-a-literary-walk-through-montreals-bairro-portugues\/parcduportual\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beginning in  the 1950s, they moved in \u00a0as earlier immigrant groups moved out. \u00a0It was  a time when &#8220;urban renewal&#8221; was advocated by planners around the world  and razing the &#8220;slum&#8221; housing on the Plateau was openly advocated. \u00a0But  the Portuguese bought, rebuilt and loved the modest old houses. \u00a0In 1974  the Ordre des architectes du Quebec honoured \u00a0the whole community for  renovation work in the area bounded by Park Avenue and St. Denis,  Sherbrooke and St. Joseph. Anyone who enjoys the Plateau today owes the  Portuguese community a great debt.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to learn more: the Parc du Portugal will be the starting  point for a Jane&#8217;s Walk Saturday May 7 (in English) and Sunday May 8 (in  French.) (Reserve on<a href=\"http:\/\/janeswalk.net\/walks\/view\/o_bairro_portugues_de_montreal\/\"> www.janeswalk.net<\/a>). Both will deal with the great contribution that the Portuguese have  made to Montreal, and both will allow promenaders to admire the benches.<\/p>\n<p>And perhaps by then the graffiti that defaced them last week will be  removed.
