The new design includes a strange cage along the  sidewalk, and a hostile aesthetic which hampers the public space.<\/p>\n<p>Clive Doucet devoted his column this week to a refreshing lament of the federal election. Highlighting the <a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/spacingottawa.ca\/2011\/04\/18\/doucet-cities-cant-survive-on-coffee-and-donut-politics\/\">Donut Shop <\/a>photo-ops  of the Harper campaign Doucet notes that the debate is lacking in a  proper discussion of culture and instead turning to the politics of  consumption; most notably of consumption of security.<\/p>\n<p>Jay Baltz provides an update on the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/04\/19\/hintonburg-hub-will-the-city-do-the-right-thing\/\">Hiltonburg Hub<\/a> project, an effort to bring much needed affordable housing and  community health amenities to an undeserved part of the city. Baltz  argues that government support is necessary to allow the not-for-profit  project to include heritage and green space preservation at the proposed  site.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sa\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-atlantic.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/>Sean Gillis comments and speculates on the reasons behind a massive new commercial development at <a href=\"http:\/\/http\/\/spacingatlantic.ca\/2011\/04\/19\/bayers-lake-expansion-approved-behind-closed-doors\/\">Bayers Lake<\/a> approved without public consultation by the Halifax Regional  Municipality. The development will help pay to upgrade infrastructure in  the area but could adversely affect plans for a nearby regional park.<\/p>\n<p>Following up on Earth Day, Halifax&#8217;s Ecology Action Centre is kicked off a &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/04\/22\/the-cogswell-interchange-and-the-ecology-action-centre-celebrate-40-years\/\">40 Days of Action<\/a>&#8216; campaign this week with a picnic at the site of a failed waterfront expressway project.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"st\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As part of the <em>One Book Toronto <\/em>series Jacqueline Whyte Appleby reflects on the use of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/04\/21\/keep-toronto-reading-401-the-kings-highway\/\">highway 401<\/a> in this year&#8217;s selected novel <em>Midnight at the Dragon Cafe<\/em>.  Set during the time period in which the highway was being built,  Appleby reflects on the process of building the freeway and how it  changed lives in the Province; links to great historical shots are also  included.<\/p>\n<p>Following up on a feature in the latest edition of the magazine, Ian Malczewski highlights, and provides links to, a new short film about the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/04\/21\/sunday-morning-island-shinny\/\">Margaret Philip Cup<\/a>, a memorial trophy awarded within the women&#8217;s hockey league that plays in the frozen lagoons of the Toronto Islands.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Devin Alfaro looks at surprising polls showing the NDP leading across the Montreal region and speculates about what an <a href=\"..\/2011\/04\/17\/battleground-montreal\/\">electoral upheaval<\/a> could mean for the city. The discussion gets at the question of whether   an area is best served by reliable support for a party or having to be   played to with promises.<\/p>\n<p>Marie-Sophie Banville reflects on her concerns for the city&#8217;s plans to create a <a href=\"..\/2011\/04\/22\/pour-des-espaces-publics-inclusifs-dans-sainte-marie\/\">new public space<\/a> in the Sainte-Marie neighbourhood of Montreal.
