Farrow describes Jane&#8217;s Walks as<em> &#8220;a way to celebrate neighbourhoods by getting locals to share their  neighbourhood specific knowledge with interested parties. It also serves  as a form of civic engagement by getting residents involved in their  neighbourhood, or at minimum, thinking optimistically about civic  engagement. Its other goals are to connect people, narrow social  distance and increase social cohesion.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecologieurbaine.net\/sites\/www.ecologieurbaine.net\/files\/imce\/programme_promenade_de_jane_7_et_8_mai_2011_resume.pdf\">schedule of Montreal walks<\/a> is hosted by the Urban Ecology Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Here are a few that piqued my interest:<\/p>\n<p><strong>O Bairro Portugu\u00eas de Montr\u00e9al<\/strong>, hosted by local author Mary Soderstrom, explores the history and presence of the Portuguese community in the Plateau (she&#8217;s written <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vehiculepress.com\/cgi-bin\/dbman2\/db.cgi?db=default&amp;uid=default&amp;view_records=View%2BRecords&amp;ISBN=978-1-55065-292-5\">a book on the topic<\/a>, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2011\/04\/25\/mark-the-anniversary-of-a-peaceful-revolution-with-a-literary-walk-through-montreals-bairro-portugues\/\">post here in Spacing Montreal<\/a>).<br \/>\nMeet : Parc du Portugal, 4231 St-Laurent, Saturday May 7th (in English) or Sunday May 8th (in French) 11 h<\/p>\n<p><strong>M\u00e9gaprojets: retomb\u00e9es n\u00e9fastes ou b\u00e9n\u00e9fiques ?<\/strong> is hosted by the folks from CURA, a group affiliated with McGill&#8217;s urban planning department that has been involved in grassroots projects around the Turcot interchange and in the MUHC megahospital.<br \/>\nMeet : M\u00e9tro Vend\u00f4me, near the 105 bus, Sunday May 8th at 13h<\/p>\n<p><strong>Montr\u00e9al et le &#8220;Red Light&#8221;<\/strong>, looks at the red light district in Montreal from the glory days of prohibition to the present. The walk is led by Donovan King, who is close to the burlesque scene and was involved in the movement to save Caf\u00e9 Cleo.<br \/>\nMeet : Midway Bar &amp; Salon, 1219 boulevard Saint-Laurent, Sunday May 8th at 16h<\/p>\n<p>Three different walks in Parc-Ex focus on the interplay of various immigrant communities in public space. Take your pick:<\/p>\n<p><strong>L\u2019histoire sociale et religieuse de Parc-Extension<\/strong>, led by the<em> Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 d\u2019histoire de Parc-Extension<\/em><br \/>\nMeet : M\u00e9tro Parc (in front of the station), Saturday May 7th at 14h<\/p>\n<p><strong>M\u00e9tissage urbain \u00e0 Parc-Extension<\/strong>, led by<em> Vrac Environnement \/ \u00c9co-quartier Parc-Extension, in collaboration with the Comit\u00e9 citoyen de Parc-Extension<\/em><br \/>\nMeet : In front of Parc Metro (rue Hutchison), Saturday May 7th at 10h30<\/p>\n<p><strong>Immigration et occupation de l&#8217;espace dans un quartier urbain<\/strong>: le cas de Parc Ex, led by<em> Regroupement en am\u00e9nagement de Parc Extension (RAMPE)<\/em><br \/>\nMeet: Parc metro (in front of station), Sunday May 8th at 13h<\/p>\n<p>But while immigrant communities have had an important hand in shaping most neighbourhoods in Montreal, many young LGTB flock to the Gay village in order to define themselves within the queer culture that is found there.<\/p>\n<p><strong> L\u2019exp\u00e9rience des jeunes qui arrivent dans le village gai<\/strong> led by the <em>Coalition jeunesse montr\u00e9alaise de lutte \u00e0 l\u2019homophobie<\/em> (bilingual) explores their impressions of the neighbourhood.<br \/>\nMeet : Corner Ste-Catherine et Amherst (in the park), Sunday May 8th at 13h30<\/p>\n<p>A number of other walks focus on <strong>gardens, greenspace and food security<\/strong>, in NDG, Rosemont, downtown, the Plateau, and Villeray.
