Using examples from the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Ankara, Doucet  makes the case that critical parts of the fantasy map could easily  become reality.<\/p>\n<p>While street meat may be an iconic part of many North American cities Emily Sinclair uses to two recent debates on outdoor patios and food carts to make the case of how <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/2011\/05\/26\/food-is-a-city-space-issue\/\">food can play an essential role<\/a> in creating vibrant, healthy public spaces.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sa\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-atlantic.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>New contributor and Memorial University Professor, Josh Lepawsky <img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/>applies Ronald Horvath&#8217;s 1974 idea about <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/05\/24\/making-space-for-our-sacred-cows\/\">&#8216;machine space&#8217;<\/a> to the University&#8217;s St John&#8217;s campus for a fantastic visual  representation of the space devoted to automobiles. Lepawsky then asks  the questions about how this information about delegation of space could  be used to further the university&#8217;s sustainability goals.<\/p>\n<p>Crystal Melville profiles a number of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/atlantic\/2011\/05\/27\/dont-stop-weekend-events-guide-bus-rides-shelter-walks-and-street-parties\/\">exciting events and projects<\/a> taking place across the Halifax region this week including growth  tours, bike week kickoff, community art and live performance.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"More...\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/wp-includes\/js\/tinymce\/plugins\/wordpress\/img\/trans.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"st\" src=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/ottawa\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-toronto.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Through another installment in the <em>Headspace <\/em>series, Luca De Franco <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/05\/27\/headspace-tim-jones-artscape\/\">interviews Tim Jones<\/a>,  President and CEO of Artscape, a Toronto based non-profit that creates  live-work spaces for artists. Jones discusses past successful projects  such as the Wychwood Barns and gives some details about exciting new  projects including the community arts centre in the new Regent Park and  the conversion of the magnificent century old Shaw Street School.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Bozikovic reflects on the disheartening waterfront talk coming from the Fords in City Hall by highlighting the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/toronto\/2011\/05\/24\/on-the-waterfront-and-what-we-can-learn-from-philadelphia\/\">success that Philadelphia is finally having<\/a> on its waterfront after decades of stalled mega-projects. The lessons  being learned in Philly speak to the importance of improving  infrastructure and public space.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"sm\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/media\/identity\/sidebar-head-montreal.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"44\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alanah Heffez posts the results of Spacing reader&#8217;s <a href=\"..\/2011\/05\/21\/spacing-montreal-votes-on-the-bixi-bailout\/\">reaction to Bixi Bailout<\/a> and finds the split to similar to the actual council vote.
