{"id":1290,"date":"2008-08-18T14:43:10","date_gmt":"2008-08-18T19:43:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/2008\/08\/18\/on-second-thoughts-dont-bike-here\/"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:54:36","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:54:36","slug":"on-second-thoughts-dont-bike-here","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2008\/08\/18\/on-second-thoughts-dont-bike-here\/","title":{"rendered":"On second thoughts, don&#8217;t bike here"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/24923563@N02\/2775362638\/\" title=\"On second thoughts, don't bike here by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\"><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3028\/2775362638_e8058a7acb.jpg\" alt=\"On second thoughts, don't bike here\" height=\"375\" \/><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Photo taken Aug 14th, 2008 on De Maisonneuve near Vendome Metro.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It seems that the city has realized that\u00a0white paint\u00a0and good intentions alone do not guarantee cyclists&#8217; safety on the streets.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0bike\u00a0chevrons indicating cyclists&#8217; right of way been blacked out along de Maisonneuve between D<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00e9<\/span>carie Blvd and Claremont Ave. I&#8217;m hoping that those dotted lines are the first sign of a more\u00a0enlightened plan for the hundreds of cyclists who commute downtown along this path each day.<\/p>\n<p>Cyclists heading downtown the West side of town will find themselves suddenly chucked into oncoming traffic just before a tricky\u00a0corner where De Maisonneuve, Upper Lachine Road and D<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'\">\u00e9<\/span>carie Blvd intersect.\u00a0\u00a0One disconnected\u00a0bike stencil appears alongside a traffic island in the middle of this intersection. The next few stencils, which\u00a0guide cyclists to pedal pedal through 2 busy bus terminals, are lost under\u00a0parked buses more often than not.
