Unnamed and underrecognized, they cut through the city fabric like a knife through baklava, revealing the accumulated layers of human occupation behind the street’s prim façades. Here you will see the unrenovated, unassuming backsides of buildings, all fire escapes and crumbling bricks or scattered backyard toys and laundry lines.

Every laneway is distinct and there are even subtle differences between the alleys of different neighbourhoods. Many of Outremont’s laneways, especially those in the north part of the neighbourhood around Bernard, Lajoie and Van Horne, are narrow, imposing and defiantly urban. The lack of vegetation — not to mention backyards — comes as a bit of a shock when you consider the verdancy of Outremont’s streets. What isn’t surprising, though, is how impeccably tidy Outremont’s alleys are. The detritus you find elsewhere in Montreal (abandoned furniture, overflowing bags of garbage) seems eerily absent.

In nearby Mile End, by contrast, the laneways are just as imposing but filled with all sorts of junk, trash and odd things. Graffiti and street art is abundant. Throughout the neighbourhood, people have fixed plastic bag holders to hydro poles, accompanied by signs that read ‘Doggie bag take out pour emporter.’

Villeray’s alleys are free and open, giving you access to an alternate dimension of ample, grassy backyards, some even with pools, clotheslines billowing in the wind. In the Latin Quarter, the laneways hide unexpected houses, ateliers, warehouses and autobody shops.
