One will run between Vaudreuil and C\u00f4te-Vertu and another will connect the new Bell Canada campus on Nun&#8217;s Island with the South Shore. Both routes will feature air-conditioned buses, more comfortable seats and possibly even wifi internet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>L\u2019AMT a confirm\u00e9 \u00e0 La Presse, hier, que le consortium Transdev-Limocar s\u2019est vu attribuer pour cinq ans les contrats d\u2019exploitation des nouveaux autobus express qui seront mis en service d\u00e8s septembre prochain, et dont personne ou presque n\u2019avait entendu parler avant le week-end dernier.<\/p>\n<p>Le premier, l\u2019Express de L\u2019\u00cele-des-S\u0153urs, fera la navette entre le nouveau campus industriel de Bell Canada, am\u00e9nag\u00e9 juste \u00e0 l\u2019entr\u00e9e de Montr\u00e9al, et les deux grands stationnements incitatifs de la Rive-Sud qui appartiennent \u00e0 l\u2019AMT, Chevrier et Panama.<\/p>\n<p>Le second, l\u2019Express Vaudreuil, cr\u00e9era une nouvelle liaison rapide entre la gare de train de banlieue de Vaudreuil-Dorion, o\u00f9 l\u2019affluence est consid\u00e9rable, et le terminus C\u00f4te-Vertu, de l\u2019AMT, situ\u00e9 juste \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 d\u2019une station de m\u00e9tro, dans l\u2019arrondissement de Saint-Laurent, au nord-ouest de Montr\u00e9al.<\/p>\n<p>Les deux services seront dispens\u00e9s \u00e0 des intervalles de 20 et 30 minutes, respectivement, durant les heures de pointe seulement.<\/p>\n<p>La vice-pr\u00e9sidente aux communications de l\u2019AMT, Marie Gendron, a affirm\u00e9 hier que l\u2019exploitant de l\u2019Express de L\u2019\u00cele-des-S\u0153urs, Transdev-Limocar, touchera une somme de 554 445$ par ann\u00e9e, durant cinq ans, pour un minimum annuel de 3300 heures de service.<\/p>\n<p>La valeur totale du contrat oscille autour de 2,8 millions.<\/p>\n<p>Selon l\u2019AMT, les frais d\u2019exploitation de l\u2019Express de L\u2019\u00cele-des-S\u0153urs seront assum\u00e9s \u00e0 40% par Bell. L\u2019AMT et la Ville de Longueuil partageront 10% de la facture. La moiti\u00e9 du financement proviendra du Fonds vert du gouvernement du Qu\u00e9bec, qui subventionne les nouveaux services de transports en commun.<\/p>\n<p>Mme Gendron n\u2019a toutefois pu fournir les co\u00fbts d\u2019exploitation pr\u00e9vus pour l\u2019autre projet, l\u2019Express Vaudreuil, ni les pr\u00e9visions d\u2019achalandage attendues, ni le seuil d\u2019autofinancement esp\u00e9r\u00e9 de ces projets de transports en commun.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although its fare scheme has not been approved yet, the AMT plans to include access to the express buses within its TRAM 5 monthly pass, which costs $133 and includes access to buses, trains and metros throughout the Montreal region. It also plans to offer a $95.50 monthly pass that would give commuters access to the express bus only.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the AMT&#8217;s decision to award the contract to a private company has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberpresse.ca\/article\/20080820\/CPACTUALITES\/808200682\/5155\/CPACTUALITES\">elicited a groan<\/a> from the unions and the STM. The FTQ warned that the express buses would lead to &#8220;le transport en commun \u00e0 deux vitesses.&#8221; The STM, meanwhile, said it had wanted to bid for the contract to operate the bus routes but that its bid was rejected by the AMT for unknown reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Although we&#8217;ll have to wait to see what political manoeuvering led to the AMT&#8217;s decision, this raises the broader question of private-sector involvement in public transit: just how much do we want? Most major transit systems around the world include at least some private-public partnerships.
