{"id":2092,"date":"2009-02-09T13:14:56","date_gmt":"2009-02-09T18:14:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/2009\/02\/09\/diy-opus-design\/"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:46:16","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:46:16","slug":"diy-opus-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/02\/09\/diy-opus-design\/","title":{"rendered":"DIY Opus Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/02\/3-opus-cards.jpg\" title=\"3-opus-cards.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/02\/3-opus-cards.jpg\" alt=\"3-opus-cards.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This blog has questioned the decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2008\/04\/21\/meet-opus-your-new-smart-card\/\">name Montreal&#8217;s transit card after a cartoon penguin<\/a>, but so far nobody&#8217;s come right out and said that the Opus card is plain old ugly.<\/p>\n<p>That is, until <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opuslift.com\/\">OpusLift.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8220;Personnellement, je la trouvais tellement laide (vous excuserez ma franchise), si peu repr\u00e9sentative de Montr\u00e9al et des montr\u00e9alais que je n&#8217;ai pas r\u00e9sist\u00e9 \u00e0 l&#8217;envie d&#8217;infliger quelques modifications \u00e0 la mienne,&#8221; <\/em>writes Melissa Nougier, a graphic designer who launched the website in January.<\/p>\n<p>After the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2008\/10\/29\/room-to-make-it-real\/\">branding of Greater Montreal<\/a> raised so much criticism in October, Nougier says, it seemed relevant to start a dialogue about implicating citizens in the city&#8217;s defining aesthetic choices.\u00a0<span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px\"><span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px\"><span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px\"><span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px\"><span style=\"border-collapse: separate; color: #000000; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 12px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: normal; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; word-spacing: 0px\"><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> She writes that, from a design perspective, the Opus card looked dated before it even hit the streets last year.<\/p>\n<p><em>OpusLift<\/em> provides a simple PDF template and invites people to create own design. Then they can print out the results and customize their transit card, as well as send their original creations to be posted on the website. One of the advantages of the Opus card is that you can literally glue just about anything to it without hampering the magnetic mechanism.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to <em>OpusLift<\/em> can also rate the submissions and Nougier says she&#8217;s received inquiries from people who want to purchase the creations. She&#8217;s currently contemplating whether to seek permission from the designers to make their creations public. She&#8217;d also be happy to collaborate with the STM but so far hasn&#8217;t had any contact with the officials.<\/p>\n<p>But perhaps DIY transit cards capture the creative spirit of Montreal better than a design competition ever could.<\/p>\n<p>You can also visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo_search.php?oid=43289873795&amp;view=all#\/group.php?gid=43289873795\">OpusLift facebook group<\/a> for some ideas on how to put your &#8220;Opus lift&#8221; into practice.<\/p>\n<p><em>Images: above: designs par Philippe, Suana, et anonyme.
