The trees, which were planted after the construction of de Maisonneuve Blvd. in the mid-1960s, were cut down to make way for a new plaza that will form part of the Quartier des spectacles. La Presse has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberpresse.ca\/actualites\/regional\/montreal\/200904\/10\/01-845677-quartier-des-spectacles-67-arbres-coupes.php\">more detail<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i> La Ville a du coup lanc\u00e9 la construction de la place de l&#8217;Adresse symphonique, un parc qui fera partie du Quartier des spectacles. \u00abOn doit enti\u00e8rement refaire la place, excaver, refaire les \u00e9gouts, l&#8217;aqueduc, le service \u00e9lectrique et les lignes t\u00e9l\u00e9phoniques\u00bb, indique Cl\u00e9ment Demers, directeur g\u00e9n\u00e9ral de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 Quartier international, l&#8217;entreprise qui g\u00e8re le projet pour le compte de la Ville.<\/p>\n<p>Les arbres, surtout des pommetiers, avaient \u00e9t\u00e9 plant\u00e9s apr\u00e8s la construction du m\u00e9tro, au milieu des ann\u00e9es 60. On les a jug\u00e9s trop vieux, \u00e0 45 ans, pour survivre \u00e0 une transplantation, explique M. Demers. C&#8217;est pourquoi on les a coup\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>(&#8230;) Cl\u00e9ment Demers promet que de nouveaux pommetiers aux fleurs roses \u00e9gaieront le quadrilat\u00e8re, d\u00e9limit\u00e9 par les rues de Montigny, Clark, Ontario et Saint-Urbain.
