I’m Matthew Blackett, the publisher of Spacing, a magazine that covers a variety of issues surrounding Toronto’s urban landscape and public spaces.

We launched the magazine in December 2003 and quickly discovered that there are a lot of people who are passionate about how cities are built. From planning and architecture students to graffiti artists to retired historical buffs, there are thousands upon thousands of residents who care deeply about their neighbourhood and want to make a positive impact on their local public spaces.

We launched a daily blog in the summer of 2005 called Spacing Wire and it quickly became a regular destination for those craving news and analysis on how Toronto’s public realm was taking shape.

Earlier this spring, the editors of Spacing came up to Montréal and got together with a handful of fantastic writers who are fascinated with urban details. We agreed to launch a daily blog about your city that will chronicle their observations and obsessions: enter Spacing Montréal.

Proud people from both Toronto and Montreal like to try and compare and contrast our two cities. Often, there is animosity between our burgs, but we think we should put that behind us — besides, neither of our hockey teams made the playoffs this year so we have little to fight about. The editors of Spacing want to use this opportunity to learn from each others’ city: Torontonians can watch the search for the artist behind beautifully painted images on sewer grates and Montrealers can check out the laneways that get turned into art galleries.

We hope that Spacing Montréal can provide readers with insightful writing, a unique perspective on local issues, and a greater understanding of Montréal’s urban landscape.

Photographer and Spacing Montréal contributor Daniel Seguin recently captured an amazing image that deserves to be the first posted on this blog.
