{"id":303,"date":"2007-11-28T13:49:02","date_gmt":"2007-11-28T17:49:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=303"},"modified":"2007-11-28T15:57:11","modified_gmt":"2007-11-28T19:57:11","slug":"voice-of-the-tube-fired","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2007\/11\/28\/voice-of-the-tube-fired\/","title":{"rendered":"Voice of the Tube fired"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm2.static.flickr.com\/1012\/564276945_614f4724b7.jpg\" height=\"217\" width=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the recent introduction of the pleasant automated voice <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/wire\/?p=2494\">announcing TTC stops<\/a> in Toronto, it is interesting to read that the voice actor behind the familiar London Tube announcements has been <strike>fired<\/strike> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/uk\/article2948970.ece\">sacked<\/a>. She was let go because she posted a series of spoof announcements on her website (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.emmaclarke.com\/fun\/mind-the-gap\/spoof-london-underground-announcements\">listen to them here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em> The spoofs by Emma Clarke, one of the country&#8217;s most successful voiceover artists, included a reminder to &#8220;our American tourist friends that you are almost certainly talking too loudly&#8221; and an appeal to the passenger in the red shirt to stop &#8220;staring at that woman&#8217;s chest&#8221;. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> But Transport for London decided that it was the end of the line after Ms Clarke, a 36-year-old mother of two who is trying to build a career in comedy, told a newspaper that she never used the Tube any more because it was &#8220;dreadful&#8221;. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> A TfL spokeswoman said: &#8220;Some of the spoof announcements are very funny, but Emma is a bit silly to go round slagging off her client&#8217;s services. London Underground is sorry to have to announce that further contracts for Ms Clarke are experiencing severe delays.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Clarke claims that she was misquoted and that she was saying &#8220;how dreadful it was to always hear my voice on Tube trains&#8221; &#8212; she has a blog and you can read her account of events <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emmaclarke.com\/blogs\/2007\/november\/what-yesterday-was-like-for-me\">here<\/a>. Down here in Toronto we are familiar with the <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/wire\/?p=567\">TTC&#8217;s own record of humourless officiousness<\/a> &#8212; but now some comfort can be found in that it can be blamed on British  colonialism.
