La Presse is reporting that a new group, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberpresse.ca\/article\/20071204\/CPACTUALITES\/71204083\/5155\/CPACTUALITES\">La Coalition pour humaniser la rue Notre-Dame<\/a>, has been formed to oppose the Notre Dame project. They&#8217;ve set up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.notre-dame.ouvrage.org\/\">quite a nice blog<\/a> detailing their alternative vision for the street, which involves creating a &#8220;human-scaled&#8221; pedestrian space instead of a de facto expressway. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberpresse.ca\/article\/20071205\/CPACTUALITES\/712050730\/5155\/CPACTUALITES\">Here&#8217;s more from today&#8217;s La Presse<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Des riverains de la rue Notre-Dame Est, qui ont cr\u00e9\u00e9 une coalition qui rejette l&#8217;am\u00e9nagement de l&#8217;art\u00e8re en un \u00abaxe routier \u00e0 grand d\u00e9bit\u00bb, n&#8217;ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 convaincus, hier soir, par les arguments des ing\u00e9nieurs du minist\u00e8re des Transports du Qu\u00e9bec venus pr\u00e9senter ce projet dans le quartier Maisonneuve.<\/p>\n<p>La \u00abCoalition pour humaniser la rue Notre-Dame\u00bb veut favoriser un renouveau urbain \u00abtel qu&#8217;imagin\u00e9 par de grandes villes tourn\u00e9es vers l&#8217;avenir comme Toronto, Portland, Barcelone, Sydney ou S\u00e9oul\u00bb, reprenant la th\u00e8se pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e l&#8217;\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier par le chef de Projet Montr\u00e9al, Richard Bergeron.<\/p>\n<p>M. Bergeron avait dit que la transformation de la rue Notre-Dame Est en un boulevard de huit voies ne convenait pas \u00e0 un centre-ville touristique et accueillant. Il disait ne pas comprendre pourquoi on ne profite pas de l&#8217;occasion pour se doter d&#8217;un acc\u00e8s au fleuve, avec un parc riverain \u00e0 l&#8217;est du pont Jacques-Cartier, en lieu et place des quais et des hangars d\u00e9saffect\u00e9s et des voies d&#8217;assemblage des trains du port de Montr\u00e9al.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/notre-dame.ouvrage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/ce-que-le-gouvernement-propose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/notre-dame.ouvrage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/ce-que-le-gouvernement-propose.jpg\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/notre-dame.ouvrage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/ce-que-les-citoyens-veulent.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/notre-dame.ouvrage.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/12\/ce-que-les-citoyens-veulent.JPG\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It seems a bit odd that we are still considering the construction of new expressways in urban neighbourhoods, especially since that sort of thing fell out of favour 30 years ago, around the time that the Decarie Expressway was rammed through NDG and Snowdon. The alternative vision presented by the Coalition pour humaniser la rue Notre-Dame is ambitious, but it would ultimately make for a better and more livable city.
