{"id":3520,"date":"2009-11-24T00:34:54","date_gmt":"2009-11-24T05:34:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=3520"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:59:43","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:59:43","slug":"1iere-avenue-part-4-rosemontst-michel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/11\/24\/1iere-avenue-part-4-rosemontst-michel\/","title":{"rendered":"1i\u00e8re avenue, part 4: Rosemont\/St-Michel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2520\/3754780261_87f195325f.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the recent launch of <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/10\/07\/google-street-view-launches-across-canada-today\/\">Google Street View<\/a> for Canadian cities has made my trips to the many 1i\u00e8re avenues of Montreal somewhat unnecessary.\u00a0 A visit to any of these streets is now as simple as pulling up a map of Montreal and dragging the little yellow person onto whatever street you want to wish to see.\u00a0 However, I am undeterred.\u00a0 Despite my tendency to lapse on visiting and posting these 1i\u00e8re avenues, my trips will continue.\u00a0 Despite the 360\u00b0 views every few metres and the ability to toggle between street View, aerial view, and map view, the street view photos are somewhat disconnected, having been taken automatically from the roof of a car without discretion from a photographer (as amateur as I may be, in the case of these photos).\u00a0 Street View takes the photo from the centre of the street, moves on and takes the next photo and so on in perpetuity.\u00a0 I (and other humans), however, can stop and inspect something that catches my attention more closely while ignoring what I deem to be more uninteresting and banal.\u00a0 Street View does not possess this luxury.\u00a0 If anything, at least I take my photos when the city is looking good rather than the right-before and right-after winter photos taken by Google, a time of year that most people can agree is when the city looks its worst.<\/p>\n<p>No matter, my journeys continue. This time through the central neighbourhoods of Rosemont and St-Michel.\u00a0 This 1i\u00e8re avenue is the only one that existed within the pre-merger borders of Montreal so when someone spoke of (or wrote on an envelope) &#8220;1i\u00e8re avenue, Montreal&#8221;, this is the street they meant.\u00a0 Although not the longest <em>numbered<\/em> street in the city, it is the longest 1i\u00e8re avenue with a length of 14 blocks.\u00a0 It also starts off one of the longer continuous (more-or-less) series of numbered streets in the city which ends 44e avenue, right before boul de l&#8217;Assomption. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>This 1i\u00e8re avenue starts at the south in a park (pictured above) that connects to a disjointed section of Laurier E..\u00a0 We will continue northward until the street&#8217;s end at Jarry E..<\/p>\n<p>These photos were taken on June 28, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first intersection at the pleasant commercial stretch of rue Masson, or, as they&#8217;ll have you call it, <em>Promenade Masson.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2445\/3755581040_3d005b671b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Much of the residential housing in this part of Rosemont is made up of typical Montreal &#8216;plexes with winding staircases connecting the second and sometimes third storey balconies with the street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2609\/3757749791_32c203925f.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some interesting infill just north of Masson.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2507\/3754781595_208723d1b5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen a plex in Montreal like these before.\u00a0 There were about four in a row, all the same.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3491\/3755582450_95dbdc7211.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2569\/3755583290_4dbd432cde.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>White tape covering the generic &#8220;st.&#8221; and the &#8220;st&#8221; after the 1 on these street signs hints at the possibility of an anglo history in this neighbourhood.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2083\/3754783365_6a187704bc.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not unlike most neighbourhoods in Montreal, the housing types and architecture changes every couple blocks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2533\/3754784015_c47a54740a.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2602\/3755585268_2a307f4429.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"372\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2594\/3754785419_e67118aeb4.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>More infill done relatively well.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3480\/3755591742_8ecce5c5c9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It appears that the city has removed some of the sidewalk which has resulted in the planting of some beautiful flowers and other plants.\u00a0 It also seems to have inspired people to continue planting as the front yards of all these houses all have some very nice landscaping.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3535\/3755592662_5a3c0f0c14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A rare abandoned house, boarded up American-style.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2425\/3754792485_6b60e170ef.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This park (Parc Saint-Marc) also has a small community garden, some of which can be seen in the background.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2534\/3754793413_b223cb8da9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At rue Beaujeu, the street ends but starts again slightly to the west.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3453\/3755594928_cefa2611f2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I assume the street is disconnected so as to go around this church.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2649\/3755595890_98b3658dec.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2480\/3755596956_e31eefa518.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The intersection of Jean-Talon.\u00a0 We&#8217;re now in St-Michel.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2600\/3754795625_72468bce33.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>North of Jean-Talon, the density lowers considerably.\u00a0 The housing also gets kind of weird.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2626\/3754796707_d0b83d075e.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2465\/3754797387_f6a24702ac.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3426\/3755598726_11453250df.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The elevated autoroute 40 (autoroute M\u00e9tropolitaine) looms in the distance.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2649\/3755599398_ffc1cf3d72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I really like these unfinished off-ramps all along the elevated highway, suggesting a more ambitious plan for this highway in the past.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3479\/3754799161_b380618b4b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Beyond the highway, new condo construction is popping up everywhere.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2480\/3755600412_cf8b56a68f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Likely spurred by the Cirque de Soleil campus on Jarry at the end of the street.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\"
