Outside my front door, bands are marching, flags are flying, and crucifixes are hanging high.<\/p>\n<p>The only spectators are the residents of the street; most of whom had no idea that at 5 o&#8217;clock on this Sunday afternoon, about 200 people would be walking by their door.<\/p>\n<p>It began ominously. The familiar drone of the vehicles travelling down what I like to call \u00ab Autoroute St-Urbain \u00bb ceased to rattle my eardrums. There was silence, like in a film; you know, the kind one would expect to hear before the alien jumps out of the patient&#8217;s stomach, or when all the animals have fled in fear of the monster prowling the forest.<\/p>\n<p>Suddenly, there were brass instruments. I naively thought my flatmate had taken on a new affinity for the Drum Corps.<\/p>\n<p>But then as it grew louder, we came to realise that this was not any ordinary Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The Portuguese Association of Canada, along with l&#8217;\u00c9glise Santa Cruz, is staging a show of pride&#8230;or something. Whatever it is, it is nice to see all the neighbours, out on their lawns and balconies, equally confused by the goings-on.<\/p>\n<p>So suddenly it commenced, so suddenly it concluded.<\/p>\n<p>And as I look further up the street, preparing for the return of that familiar drone of vehicles travelling down what I like to call Autoroute St-Urbain, I have to laugh to myself:<\/p>\n<p>This would never happen in Vancouver; it rains too much.<br \/>\nThis would never happen in Calgary; it&#8217;s much too cold.<br \/>\nThis would never happen in Toronto; they&#8217;re too busy fighting their so-called \u00ab <a title=\"How to fan the flames of the fake War on the Car in Toronto\" href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/wire\/2009\/06\/17\/how-to-fan-the-flames-of-the-fake-war-on-the-car-in-toronto\/\">War on Cars<\/a> \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>No, this could only happen in Montr\u00e9al, and for that, I am glad I live here.<\/p>\n<p>(Unless, of course, I were a motorist\u2026)<br \/>\n<a title=\"Watching the Portuguese Parade by \u00c9mile Thomas, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacingmontreal\/3893832275\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3512\/3893832275_a116d44a32.jpg\" alt=\"Watching the Portuguese Parade\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mayoralty candidates take note: \u00ab Leadership involves finding a parade and getting in front of it. \u00bb &#8211; John Naisbitt My street is having a parade!
