{"id":3943,"date":"2009-09-16T05:29:08","date_gmt":"2009-09-16T10:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=3943"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:53:29","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:53:29","slug":"thinking-beyond-the-shuko","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/09\/16\/thinking-beyond-the-shuko\/","title":{"rendered":"Thinking beyond the Shuko"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"J'aime Montr\u00e9al by \u00c9mile Thomas, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spacingmontreal\/3895659938\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2450\/3895659938_5f84ea6c5a.jpg\" alt=\"J'aime Montr\u00e9al\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n\u00ab I like the way you comb your hair<br \/>\nI like the stylish clothes you wear<br \/>\nIt\u2019s just the little things you do<br \/>\nThat makes me want to sleep with you. \u00bb<br \/>\n<em>&#8211; Wreckx-N-Effect<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Remember les 5 shuko de Montr\u00e9al?<br \/>\nWhatever happened to that initiative?<\/p>\n<p>A Google search reveals an offline website, all-talk-but-no-action, and unremitting mantra stating: \u00ab Montr\u00e9al is a UNESCO design city along with Buenos Aires and Berlin. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry, but Montr\u00e9al is no Buenos Aires or Berlin.<br \/>\nHowever, it once was and can be again.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of the 5 shuko was extremely well intended; I must give credit where credit is due and Mayor Tremblay deserves praise for this undertaking. Yet, where he failed is the reason why I and most of my fellow citizens have a strong dislike for their politicians: He talked, talked, talked but did not deliver the goods.<\/p>\n<p>Or, that he talked, talked, talked and did not exploit the shuko opportunity as a springboard to go beyond the 5 challenges to beautify the urban milieu; to make design an integral part of municipal policy and not just a jingle.<\/p>\n<p>And the goods, had they been delivered, would have been delicious:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1.\u00a0 cr\u00e9er un am\u00e9nagement qui met en valeur les verri\u00e8res de l&#8217;artiste Marcelle Ferron aux abords de la station de m\u00e9tro Champ-de-Mars<\/li>\n<li>2.\u00a0 requalifier le mur est du Palais de justice<\/li>\n<li>3.\u00a0 concevoir un nouvel abribus<\/li>\n<li>4.\u00a0 d\u00e9velopper une marque distinctive et une identit\u00e9 propre aux taxis montr\u00e9alais<\/li>\n<li>5.\u00a0 concevoir le mobilier festivalier temporaire du Quartier des spectacles <em>(according to Tourisme Montr\u00e9al, this has already been accomplished) <\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hopefully, la Mairie is continuing to work on these projects and either<br \/>\na) They are keeping it top-secret, or<br \/>\nb) I am just inept at researching for Spacing articles.<\/p>\n<p><em>(UPDATE : it seems the answer is c) none of the above. Although the shuko seemed to have been all but forgotten over the summer when this article was written, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.realisonsmontreal.com\/fr\/projet\/Shuko-Montreal\">they have recently [as in the past few hours] popped up all over the radar<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0 I guess everyone involved in the shuko was on vacation during the summer or my e-mails to their office were marked as spam. In any case, good job Design Montr\u00e9al for keeping hope alive. Faith, 1 &#8211; Skepticism, 0)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While alluding to this notion of urban design, we must recognise its civic importance. Not only does it enfranchise citizens, making them feel part of a unique community that is their own, but also, it trademarks Montr\u00e9al \u2013 something that every urban centre around the world is trying to accomplish as they endeavour to secure the lucrative tourist market and workers for the crescive, knowledge-based employment sector.<!--more--><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Who said everything had to be grey and dull?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3973\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3973\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fabiendany.com\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3973\" title=\"Stade Francais Paris - Pretty in Pink - Will our taxis be next? \" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2009\/09\/Stade-Francais-par-Fabien-Deny.JPG\" alt=\"Fabien Dany - www.fabiendany.com\" width=\"500\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3973\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Fabien Dany<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Referring to challenge #4, Urbania magazine had a proposal to paint all the taxis hot pink. I say, \u00ab Why not? \u00bb It worked for the Stade Fran\u00e7ais Paris rugby club (<em>whose <a title=\"Stade Fran\u00e7ais new jersey\" href=\"http:\/\/jackiesportsblog.blogspot.com\/2008\/10\/stade-francais-new-jersey.html\">2008\/2009 maillot was so hideously beautiful<\/a>, everyone wanted it<\/em>). Instead of hiring Paul Andreu to design a building, maybe we should first get Max Guazzini on board to offer some marketing tips. Perhaps he could dream up one of those Dieux de Stade-type calendars featuring the cabbies of Montr\u00e9al. We\u2019re always saying how sexy our city is. Or, why not hot pink the sidewalks in Le Village? Create a sort of Gay Red Carpet.<\/p>\n<p>Why stop there? New York paints their bike lanes green so that motorists are more aware of them. Why not do the same with Montr\u00e9al bike network, but in purple? We could create inter-borough pride by marking the borders of each arrondissement in glittery gold on the sidewalks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who said everything had to be circles and squares?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"ampelmann by estorde, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/estorde\/1991865910\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Ampelm\u00e4nnchen, ravi de vous rencontrer.\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2066\/1991865910_b4e913dfc1.jpg\" alt=\"ampelmann\" width=\"500\" height=\"313\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Estorde<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Every now and again, I see traffic lights in Montr\u00e9al where the red light has been fashioned into a heart. I say, \u00ab Why not? \u00bb Old East Berlin is famous for its Ampelm\u00e4nnchen; he is so cute with his petit bourgeois hat. Elsewhere, one can find Ampelm\u00e4nnchen with an umbrella, Ampelm\u00e4nnchen with a bicycle, and even Ampelm\u00e4nnchen\u2019s hot wife, Ampelfrau. I propose a Feu Rouge Stripper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who said metal cannot be painted?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Sunset Light on Golden Gate by Saurabh Deoras, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/saurabh-deoras-photography\/3726114151\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Sunset Light on Golden Gate\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3440\/3726114151_61de6c179d.jpg\" alt=\"Sunset Light on Golden Gate\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Saurabh Deoras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Imagine, the Jacques Cartier Bridge, impressive landmark in the urban backdrop of Montr\u00e9al, painted black and fitted with LED lighting that changes colour according to various events like the cross on Mont Royal. I say, \u00ab Why not? \u00bb The Golden Gate Bridge, as remarkable an engineering feat as it was, would be but a bridge if it were not for the paint job. Now, International Orange makes the city of San Francisco millions of dollars in tourism revenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who said everything had to look like a toilet?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a title=\"Fete St-Jean by caribb, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/caribb\/3643610257\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"F\u00eate St-Jean au M\u00e9tro Sherbrooke\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3398\/3643610257_664b247615.jpg\" alt=\"Fete St-Jean\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Caribb<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Much like the Statue of Liberty was for immigrants arriving in New York, the Ville-Marie Tunnel is, for many, the gateway to the heart of Montr\u00e9al. At worst, it looks like a urinal. At best, it looks like the Toronto subway. Neither one is acceptable; especially given the nice work we have done with our m\u00e9tro. Coloured tile work by a local artist? I say, \u00ab Why not? \u00bb Ride between m\u00e9tro stations in Lyon and you are treated to a light show. I was once in a tunnel spanning the Huangpu River in Shanghai in which I felt like I was in an old Star Trek episode: \u00ab Mister Sulu, warp speed! \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the city should not devise anything too distracting for the motorists. Safety first.<\/p>\n<p>These are just a few examples of how little things can make a city great\/fantastic\/interesting\/creative\/<em>insert your own adjective here<\/em>. Yeah, they may be kitsch, but that\u2019s why we have the pool of creative talent for which other cities envy us.<\/p>\n<p>Besides, even if it is a bit outlandish, you have to admit, we all do like a bit of cheese.
