My interest was piqued in September when J.D. Gravenor posted a <a href=\"http:\/\/coolopolis.blogspot.com\/2007\/09\/telling-storeys.html\">1910 list of apartment buildings in Montreal<\/a> on Coolopolis. Some were more fanciful than others &#8212; there&#8217;s the San Remo on Durocher, the Smithsonian on <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;time=&#038;date=&#038;ttype=&#038;q=selkirk+avenue+montreal+qc&#038;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&#038;sspn=38.008397,96.328125&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=45.496205,-73.583357&#038;spn=0.001028,0.00294&#038;z=19&#038;om=1\">Selkirk<\/a>, the Lochinvar on Crescent, the Imperial on <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;time=&#038;date=&#038;ttype=&#038;q=hope+avenue,+montreal,+qc&#038;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&#038;sspn=38.008397,96.328125&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;ll=45.489601,-73.580611&#038;spn=0.001029,0.00294&#038;z=19&#038;om=1\">Hope<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>I came across a treasure trove of cool apartment building names last week when I walked down Decarie from Van Horne to Queen Mary. It&#8217;s not an obvious street down which to stroll, mainly because there&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/christopherdewolf\/2121266289\/\">noisy expressway running down the middle<\/a> of it, but there&#8217;s all sorts of interesting discoveries to be made on this once-fashionable boulevard, including many apartment buildings built at the peak of its popularity as a cruising strip in the 1940s and 50s.
