{"id":4408,"date":"2009-10-18T22:52:11","date_gmt":"2009-10-19T03:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=4408"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:38:22","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:38:22","slug":"st-henri-residents-take-their-candidates-for-a-walk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/10\/18\/st-henri-residents-take-their-candidates-for-a-walk\/","title":{"rendered":"St-Henri residents take their candidates for a walk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever wished that your local politicians could walk a mile in your shoes?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s what group of St-Henri citizens achieved today when they brought together local candidates from Union, Vision and Projet Montr\u00e9al, as well as two independents running in their riding, and then took them for a stroll down main street.<\/p>\n<p>Manuel Johnson, one of the event organizers and author of the <a href=\"http:\/\/st-henrichronicles.blogspot.com\/2009\/10\/one-afternoon-15th-october-in-saint.html\">Saint-Henri Chronicles <\/a>blog, describes the walk and talk with local candidates:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;We split into three groups, each piloted by a local &#8220;guide&#8221;, and brought the candidates for a walk along rush-hour St-Antoine, so they could experience our unpleasant every-day reality, and so we could point out the narrow sidewalks, the three lanes of one-way traffic, the excessive speed, the traffic-light poles planted smack-dab in the middle of the sidewalk blocking stroller passage, the school-crossing signs blocked by tree branches and facing away from the drivers.\u00a0 Here, the <em>politicians followed the residents<\/em> as we walked toward the Centre communautaire des femmes actives.\u00a0 Not the other way around.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the community centre, the resients &#8211; many of whom were parents of young children &#8211; served coffee and proposed some inexpensive ways to make St-Antoine street safer, such allowing parrallel parking on both sides of the street to create a physical barrier between pedestrians and vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>In the end, all the candidates who attended signed an engagement prepared by the citizen group. Projet Montr\u00e9al also released a <a href=\"http:\/\/projetmontrealsudouest.wordpress.com\/2009\/10\/17\/projet-montreal-sud-ouest-soutient-les-demarches-citoyennes-d%E2%80%99apaisement-de-la-circulation\/\">communiqu\u00e9<\/a> supporting the measures and the citizen-led initiative.<\/p>\n<p>But more importantly, no matter who wins on November 1st, these St-Henri residents can hold the person in office accountable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever wished that your local politicians could walk a mile in your shoes?
