New ideas keep emerging for public transit in Montreal even as the day-to-day operations of the bus, metro and commuter train systems struggle to keep up with demand<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Today, the Gazette reports<\/a> that the Agence m\u00e9tropolitain de transport is working with other government bodies to implement a rail connection to Trudeau International Airport and improve commuter service on the West Island. Its latest idea is to lay new track for a tram-train<\/a> — a type of light rail vehicle that can run on both streetcar tracks and heavy rail tracks — that would link downtown, the airport and the West Island. <\/p>\n

Since the new track would run parallel to the existing Canadian Pacific\/Canadian National tracks used by the AMT’s commuter rail service, it could also be used by commuter trains on the Montreal-Dorion line, allowing them to bypass freight operations. Another scenario would be to restrict CP\/CN freight trains to a single track, freeing up the other one for passenger trains.<\/p>\n

The AMT wants to use tram-trains in other places, too:<\/p>\n

The MTA’s soon-to-be released 2008-09-10 capital-works plan commits funds for different feasibility studies this year to introduce tram-trains to Montreal.<\/p>\n

One $200,000 feasibility study is for a tram-train in Lachine borough, which is lobbying the city of Montreal to revive an old Lachine tramway route as a link to downtown.<\/p>\n

The Quebec government has announced it will level part of the Turcot Interchange, so the tram-train would give commuters an alternative way to travel between downtown and the West Island during reconstruction, the MTA plan says.<\/p>\n

Sources say the MTA wants to study a tram-train so the Lachine tramway would be able to connect to the downtown-airport-West Island commuter train line without requiring passengers to transfer.<\/p>\n

The capital-works plan also calls for a $200,000 feasibility study to create a tram-train route along CN’s old Doney Spur, which branches off the Montreal-Deux Montagnes commuter train line in St. Laurent and runs west between the Trans-Canada Highway and Hymus Blvd. to Pointe Claire.<\/p>\n

A tram-train route there would provide a public-transit link between the West Island and St. Laurent’s Technoparc, the plan says. It also would relieve passenger traffic at the Montreal Transit Corp.’s bus terminal at the Fairview mall, it says.<\/p>\n

As well, the MTA plans to spend $400,000 this year to study a rail or tramway link between Central Station downtown and the Lucien L’Allier commuter train station about 600 metres west.<\/p>\n

One benefit would be that tram-train cars on a future downtown-airport-West Island route could bring commuters to the heart of downtown, sources said. The Montreal\/Dorion-Rigaud commuter line currently ends at Lucien L’Allier.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It’s good to see the AMT considering transit possibilities beyond the typical commuter train. Tram-trains are used successfully in Germany and the Netherlands, where they provide commuter rail service on mainline railways and streetcar service in city centres. Why not here?<\/p>\n
