It floats disembodied on the edge of a precipice, in the elbow of a highway, like a gateway into a foreign land.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to track down the name of the church, I stumbled upon a news story which hit the press just yesterday. The property is currently owned by a hotelier who, last summer, was granted a permit to dismantle and rebuild the facade. The owner had proposed a 300-room hotel on the site, but the mayor threatened to expropriate him if the project did not include housing. Nothing has budged since.<\/p>\n<p>But now, with the ruined church about to face another winter exposed, the culture minister has conceded that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cyberpresse.ca\/le-soleil\/actualites\/la-capitale\/200911\/17\/01-922632-le-maintien-de-la-facade-st-vincent-de-paul-nest-plus-une-obligation.php\">facade need not be conserved<\/a>. Mayor Lebaume seems to be pressing for demolition, stressing that it is <a href=\"http:\/\/lejournaldequebec.canoe.ca\/journaldequebec\/politique\/municipale\/archives\/2009\/11\/20091116-230538.html\">not a heritage building<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Alors, qu&#8217;est-ce qui est mieux? Un projet pas de fa\u00e7ade. Pas de projet et une fa\u00e7ade.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>What is better, asks the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voir.ca\/blogs\/raymondpoirier\/archive\/2009\/11\/18\/double-capitulation-autour-de-l-233-glise-saint-vincent-de-paul.aspx\">Voir<\/a>, A project with no fa\u00e7ade. Or a fa\u00e7ade with no project?<\/p>\n<p>A question Montrealers have been asking ourselves about the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/05\/29\/the-latest-on-the-lower-main\/\">Quadrilat\u00e8re Saint-Laurent<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/04\/12\/the-architecture-of-evocation-or-hipster-architecture\/\">Seville Theatre<\/a>, the Maison <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2009\/02\/26\/photo-du-jour-maison-louis-hippolyte-lafontaine\/\">Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine<\/a> and others&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>By the way, my little foray into Quebec City urbanism also led me to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.quebecurbain.qc.ca\">Qu\u00e9bec Urbain<\/a> blog that reminds me a bit of Spacing (en fran\u00e7ais, \u00e9videmment).
