{"id":493,"date":"2008-01-19T16:56:39","date_gmt":"2008-01-19T21:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=493"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:03:00","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:03:00","slug":"stm-service-improvements-the-real-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2008\/01\/19\/stm-service-improvements-the-real-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"STM service improvements: the real deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mtlweblog\/184847700\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/53\/184847700_26e6dfcffa.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, we asked if the STM&#8217;s recent service improvements were actually <a href=\"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/?p=464\">cutbacks in disguise<\/a>, pointing to an <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.fagstein.com\/2008\/01\/09\/stm-bus-service-gets-worse-not-better\/\">investigation by blogger Steve Faguy<\/a> that revealed that, even though weekday bus service on three important routes has been increased, weekend service has been cut. <\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s Gazette, Faguy asks STM spokesperson Marianne Rouette about these cutbacks. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canada.com\/components\/print.aspx?id=dbc7223b-3995-4a58-9700-87115dc09d9a&#038;k=18904\">Here&#8217;s what she had to say<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><b>Gazette<\/b>: Three of the city&#8217;s bus lines (18 Beaubien, 24 Sherbrooke and 121 Sauv\u00e9\/C\u00f4te Vertu) have improved service on weekdays, but fewer departures at some other times compared with the fall schedule. Why?<\/p>\n<p><b>Rouette<\/b>: The service improvements on these three lines is only for weekdays, to deal with rush-hour crowds. We don&#8217;t have these problems on the weekends. The reduction in service during the weekend (compared to the fall schedule) is a normal, seasonal change. It was the same last year in the winter. We change schedules for all buses four times a year to adjust for seasonal differences in demand.<\/p>\n<p><b>Gazette<\/b>: Why not improve service on the weekends for people who work on those days?<\/p>\n<p><b>Rouette<\/b>: At each schedule change, we look at the weekend offering, and we adjust based on customer demand. The 24 line, for example, mostly serves business workers, so fewer people take it during the weekend. There will be about 14 hours less service on the weekend for those three lines, but we&#8217;re adding over 115 hours of service to those lines during the week.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So cutting weekend bus service in the winter is, at least according to the STM, a perfectly normal course of action. Still, wouldn&#8217;t it make more sense to maintain weekend frequencies even during slow times of the year, if only to give people the option of taking transit when they normally wouldn&#8217;t?
