Now begins the first work week of the New Year and many of you will be revisiting the tradition of making resolutions. But this year, instead of playing the same tired game of promise-making\/breaking, allow me to propose 5 resolutions that actually matter \u2015 to all Montrealers. This year will be all about rediscovering the city you call home.<\/p>\n<p><em>Leave your borough.<\/em> Instead of getting drunk in the Plateau, make a b-line north to Villeray \u2013 the new hot spot in town. Rather than eating your regular downtown fast food, search for the ultimate roti in NDG.<\/p>\n<p><em>Visit the suburbs.<\/em> Not quite urban, not quite rural, it\u2019s time we put the government\u2019s m\u00e9tro extensions to use and pay a visit to our friends in geographic purgatory. At M\u00e9tro Montmorency, support the arts at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salleandremathieu.com\/\">Salle Andr\u00e9-Mathieu<\/a>. In Longueuil, shop \u2018til your heart\u2019s content along <a title=\"En faveur d\u2019une revitalisation majeure du boulevard Taschereau\" href=\"http:\/\/brossardeclair.canoe.ca\/webapp\/sitepages\/content.asp?contentid=122181&amp;id=885\">Boulevard Taschereau<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Diversify.<\/em> Sip on some ouzo in a greek restaurant in Parc-Extension, dance up a sweat at a queer event in Mile-End, and then wash your sins away at a Polish church service in the Sud-Ouest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\tFlex your intellectual muscle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022  #1 in North America for the number of university students per capita<br \/>\n\u2022  #1 in Canada for the number of foreign university students<br \/>\n\u2022  #1 in Canada for the total number of university degrees awarded<\/p>\n<p>Now that Montr\u00e9al is the <em>ville de savoir<\/em>, you better have something to show for it or risk being left behind. This year, take a class at one of the many educational institutions in our city \u2015 the options are endless:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Writing stories for Children <\/em>at Concordia<\/li>\n<li><em>Anatomie et physiologie de la sexualit\u00e9 <\/em>\u00e0 UQAM<\/li>\n<li><em>Painting &amp; Creative Expression <\/em>at Dawson College<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Have the holidays left you low on cash? Why don\u2019t you?<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>3.\t\u00a1Aprendan espa\u00f1ol! <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Forget English and French; if you reside in Montr\u00e9al and have not yet attempted to grasp these languages, your New Year\u2019s Resolutions should be more concerned with finding a new place to live.<\/p>\n<p>The new millennium belongs to Spanish \u2013 according to the recent census, it is now the 3rd most common language spoken in homes across the city. And here\u2019s another fact: <em>More people speak Spanish in the United States than live in all of Canada.<\/em> Besides, how else do you plan on seducing this increasingly influential demographic?<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\tRelease your inner artist<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember when Gilbert Rozon proposed that Montr\u00e9al become <a title=\"Faire de Montr\u00e9al LA ville de la cr\u00e9ation - Gilbert Rozon inqui\u00e8te Imp\u00e9ratif fran\u00e7ais\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ledevoir.com\/societe\/233669\/faire-de-montreal-la-ville-de-la-creation-gilbert-rozon-inquiete-imperatif-francais\"><em>LA ville de cr\u00e9ation<\/em><\/a>? It\u2019s about time we put our words into action. Our urban island paradise is teeming with cultural events. Attend a vernissage along The Main. Learn to play the autoharp and start an electro-country band. <a href=\"http:\/\/m60.ca\/\">Direct a 60 second film<\/a>.
