Catherine Street in the Gay Village<\/a>, between Berri and Papineau, it seems he forgot to consult opposition councillor <a href=\"http:\/\/ville.montreal.qc.ca\/portal\/page?_pageid=87,2478217&#038;_dad=portal&#038;_schema=PORTAL\">Sammy Forcillo<\/a>, who represents the Village at City Hall. Today, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.canoe.com\/cgi-bin\/imprimer.cgi?id=346240\">Journal de Montr\u00e9al reports<\/a> that Forcillo is dead set against the project:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>\u00abJe suis contre cette id\u00e9e surtout pour des raisons de s\u00e9curit\u00e9, a-t-il dit au Journal, mais aussi \u00e0 cause des nombreux probl\u00e8mes de circulation, de stationnement et de fr\u00e9quentation des commerces que cette fermeture pourrait causer.\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Le conseiller se demande \u00e0 quelle vitesse pourront intervenir les pompiers dans ce secteur, o\u00f9 \u00abun incendie peut rapidement devenir une conflagration\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Le projet est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 par le maire d&#8217;arrondissement, Beno\u00eet Labont\u00e9, qui a l&#8217;appui des membres de son \u00e9quipe au conseil d&#8217;arrondissement. Sammy Forcillo constitue l&#8217;opposition dans ce conseil local.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abJ&#8217;ai beaucoup de questions \u00e0 poser sur les co\u00fbts que cette mesure pourra occasionner au Service de la police.<\/p>\n<p>\u00abJ&#8217;aimerais aussi savoir qui paiera pour le service d&#8217;ordre n\u00e9cessaire puisque les rues transversales resteront ouvertes\u00bb, ajoute M. Forcillo.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It strikes me as a bit odd that Forcillo is waving the banner of the merchants, suggesting that pedestrianization will harm businesses on Ste. Catherine, when it&#8217;s the Village&#8217;s business owners who are driving this project. It seems more likely that the pedestrianization project has now become a political football that will be kicked around between Labont\u00e9, who is <a href=\"http:\/\/w5.montreal.com\/mtlweblog\/2008\/02\/vision-montreal-seeks-chief.html\">angling to become leader of the opposition<\/a> Vision Montreal, and Forcillo, who is a member of Union Montreal and a staunch Tremblay loyalist. <\/p>\n<p>I suppose it would be too much to ask that Ville-Marie councillors drop the party line and discuss pedestrianization on its own merits&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><i>Photo of Ste.
