But, at least one of those construction crews is building something to cheer about, and that&#8217;s the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maisondeveloppementdurable.org\/en\/openhouse\/65000sqfeet\/tour\"><em>Maison du d\u00e9veloppement durable<\/em> <\/a>on the South-West corner of Clark and Sainte-Catherine<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a constructing a &#8220;green&#8221; office space has been floating around Equiterre&#8217;s offices at least since I interned with their ecological transportation department in 2006. They teamed up with a number of other<a href=\"http:\/\/www.maisondeveloppementdurable.org\/en\/openhouse\/members\/members\"> environmental and social justice non-profits<\/a> to pool resources, attract donors, and build a shared office space that would be a role model for sustainable building in Quebec. Hydro Quebec, whose headquarters are on the same lot, donated the land for the project (and some of the funds).<\/p>\n<p>The 5-story building will incorporate reatures like a green\u00a0 roof, local and recycled building materials, rain-water toilets, geothermic heating and cooling, natural lighting, and an indoor plant wall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em>&#8220;By building the first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maisondeveloppementdurable.org\/en\/openhouse\/65000sqfeet\/certification\">LEED    Platinum certified<\/a> commercial building in Qu\u00e9bec, our goal is to    inspire our neighbours to imitate us,&#8221;<\/em> the group announced.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial component of the building will open the doors to a fair-trade caf\u00e9 and space for social economy. Sounds kind of like what the SDA had planned for the<em> Quadrilat\u00e8re Saint-Laurent<\/em> across the street. Except that this project is led by organizations who actually have expertise in the area, and whose approach to social and ecological justice goes beyond a marketing strategy. The Maison du d\u00e9veloppement durable will also have environmental education and research functions, and house a daycare.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps best of all, one of the features announced is an indoor public square, to function as a discussion forum for sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/_u4pZXQ-KUc0\/S5pppfRVJqI\/AAAAAAAAAXg\/9gg4lNNQtHc\/s1600\/Maison%2Bdu%2Bd%C3%83%C2%A9veloppement%2Bdurable.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"499\" height=\"294\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Top: before breaking ground, the construction crew moves the trees.\u00a0 Above: the Maison du d\u00e9veloppement durable is meant to look like this by September 2011.
