{"id":7547,"date":"2010-07-16T05:16:14","date_gmt":"2010-07-16T10:16:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spacingmontreal.ca\/?p=7547"},"modified":"2013-01-21T11:48:11","modified_gmt":"2013-01-21T16:48:11","slug":"montreals-best-alleyways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal\/2010\/07\/16\/montreals-best-alleyways\/","title":{"rendered":"Montreal&#8217;s Best Alleyways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"IMG_0421 by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4773046591\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4094\/4773046591_f6f60d2110.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0421\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When I asked readers to name their favourite alleyway in our survey, I  didn&#8217;t expect to run up against this roadblock: what is an  alleyway anyways?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/alley\">The official   definition<\/a> is &#8220;a narrow street; <em>especially<\/em> a    thoroughfare  through the middle of a block giving access to the rear     of lots or  buildings.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/ville.montreal.qc.ca\/portal\/page?_pageid=2497,3090450&amp;_dad=portal&amp;_schema=PORTAL\">Centre d&#8217;histoire de Montr\u00e9al<\/a>, alleyways as we know them first appeared in Montreal around 1845 when large farm-lots were being subdivided into smaller properties. Prior to this, inner courtyards were accessible through private carriage doors, but not from the street. The McTavish property was the first to be planned and subdivided with alleyways in the H-configuration that has since become common in Montreal&#8217;s neighbourhoods.<\/p>\n<div>\n<dl id=\"attachment_7580\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_7580\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7580\" style=\"width: 120px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/ruelles-H.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-7580\" title=\"ruelles H\" src=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/network\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2010\/07\/ruelles-H.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"120\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7580\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">H-configuration. Image from the Centre d&#39;histoire de Montr\u00e9al<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>These days, some alleyways have names &#8211; some are even called avenues &#8211; and these ones generally got the most votes:<strong> Demers, Saint-Christophe, Chateaubriand, <\/strong>and<strong> Lartigue<\/strong> each got lots of mentions, perhaps simply because they were the easiest to identify. Although they fit the official definition (narrow street; and acess to some rear lots) these alleys a far cry from your typical Montreal<em> ruelle<\/em>: there are addresses on each of these streets, and some even have sidewalks or parking lanes.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Yet they seem to fall somewhere between <em>rue<\/em> and <em>ruelle<\/em> and the rules that quietly organise our urban form fall aside in these places. The streetfront oscillates wildly between front doors that open direclty onto the pavement and deep pockets of back yard. From a birds-eye-view these streets look like jack-o-lantern teeth. On the ground, front steps\u00a0 alternate with spiral fire escapes, picket fences, and backyard tomato gardens. Balconies overhang sidewalks, electrical wires, vines and clothes-lines all  cross-cross overhead.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"saint-christophe by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4786310003\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4119\/4786310003_f90bb557a7.jpg\" alt=\"saint-christophe\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Rue Saint-Christophe (4 votes) is lined wiht just as many front doors as backyards.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0457 by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4797221958\/\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4076\/4797221958_ed1f6e095b.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0457\" width=\"490\" height=\"367\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Avenue Lartigue (4 votes), below Sherbrooke between de la Visitation and Panet, feels more like a regular street until it trails of into a dirt path and dead end.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"rue \/ ruelle demers by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4796479527\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4119\/4796479527_459af0dbf3.jpg\" alt=\"rue \/ ruelle demers\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Rue Demers (pictured between Hotel-de-Ville and De Bouillon) got 4 votes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"IMG_0400 by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4787174642\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4080\/4787174642_48664ab4db.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0400\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Avenue Chateaubriand picked up 2 votes (pictured below Mount Royal). This part of it fits the &#8220;narrow street&#8221; bill, but below Rachel some backyards face the laneway.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"alley heat wave by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4773684300\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4138\/4773684300_14b5a76936.jpg\" alt=\"alley heat wave\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a> <a title=\"alley hoops by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4773042455\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4102\/4773042455_e44a63eafd.jpg\" alt=\"alley hoops\" width=\"355\" height=\"266\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Groll (at least 4 votes) is not only car-free  and cobble-stoned, but it has cross walks to create a continueous  pedestrian passage across the Mile End.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Other alleys that got mentioned by name were Ruelle Nick Auf-der-Maur and Ruelle des Fortifications, which marks the boundary of the old walled city.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nameless Alleys<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course most of Montreal&#8217;s network of alleys have no name and this is where things get complicated: how does one cast a vote for something with no name? Some people carefully squared off their alley by naming the 4 surrounding streets, others simply tossed out one adjacent street, and still others described the atmosphere: &#8220;alleys of little Italy that smell of basil and where kids play hockey.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But one trend that emerged was that people have a soft spot for those rare pedestrian-only alleyways that look and feel more like country lanes. All of these ones got\u00a0 mentioned more than once:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"narnian alley by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4773666678\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4099\/4773666678_9aa2f7af5b.jpg\" alt=\"narnian alley\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The alleyway near <strong>Gilford and Drolet<\/strong>, with its thick foliage and quaint lamp-post always makes me think of a passage to Narnia. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"ruelle St-hubert et viger by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4786309357\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4117\/4786309357_ec13e08f9b.jpg\" alt=\"ruelle St-hubert et viger\" width=\"500\" height=\"466\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The alley e<strong>ast of Saint-Hubert, north of Viger<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"My favourite NDG alleyway - Tree by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/2863268001\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3222\/2863268001_93ae789df2.jpg\" alt=\"My favourite NDG alleyway - Tree\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/spacing.ca\/montreal2\/2008\/09\/17\/photos-du-jour-ndg-laneway\/\">written fondly<\/a> about this alleyway <strong>between Melrose and Draper <\/strong>in NDG, but I swear I didn&#8217;t vote for it in the survey.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alleys Everywhere<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Almost all of the alleys that were highlighted by our readers were either streets-that-were-alley-like or alleys-that-were-path-like.<\/p>\n<p>But exception stood out: the <em>ruelle<\/em> precisely between Fabre<span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\"> et de la Visitation<\/span> and Marquette;  St-Zotique et B\u00e9langer (pictured at the top of this post and below), got a whole two votes,   once in English and once in  French. It  isn&#8217;t a street, it isn&#8217;t a   designated &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.voir.ca\/publishing\/article.aspx?zone=1&amp;section=25&amp;article=70961\">ruelle   verte<\/a>&#8221; or a carefully maintained garden path, it&#8217;s just the space where people&#8217;s  backyards spill out into the public   sphere. It was also probably the  most inhabited alley that I visited.   Kids splashed in in-ground pools in their backyards and guitar chords floated in the heat,   laundry flapped lazily, a woman crossed the lane to show off a garden-grown zucchini to her neighbour. The flowers were unruly and and ripe raspberries  poked through fences.<br \/>\n<a title=\"IMG_0424 by alanah.montreal, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/alanahmontreal\/4773690350\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm5.static.flickr.com\/4137\/4773690350_7e45e064fc.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_0424\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Touring all these alleyways, I began to wonder why we don&#8217;t we fix them up as cycling paths, or pull up the concrete and  plant community gardens (especially for those of us on the upper floors), or close them down for block parties?<\/p>\n<p>Right now, most alleyways seem to be in limbo &#8211;  they are a  little bit intimate, a little unruly, and a little neglected.\u00a0 So perhaps the most inspiring answer to the &#8220;favourite alleyway&#8221; question where those who simply answered <em>&#8220;my <\/em>alleyway.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I asked readers to name their favourite alleyway in our survey, I didn&#8217;t expect to run up against this roadblock: what is an alleyway anyways?
