If you’ve been following the news over the past few days, you’ll know that, just as the nearly two-long makeover of St. Laurent Boulevard comes to an end, Gaz M\u00e9tropolitain has announced that it wants to rip up the newly-rebuilt street <\/a> in 40 different places to make emergency repairs to its underground gas lines. Plateau borough mayor Helen Fotopoulos has declared herself furious at the company for failing to make its repairs last year, when the street was already under excavation and other utility companies, including Bell and Videotron, did work on their own lines. According to Fotopoulos, Gaz M\u00e9tro was even offered the chance to perform work last year, but it declined. Yesterday, Mayor G\u00e9rald Tremblay also chastised Gaz M\u00e9tro but said that there was nothing the city could do to prevent the work, which the gas company has deemed urgent. <\/p>\n

Today, Gaz M\u00e9tro offered an apology<\/a> and promised to pay the full costs of repairing the Main’s new sidewalks after it digs them up. Work should be finished by the end of May, but many merchants along the beleaguered boulevard worry that, after a difficult two years, this last-minute round of construction could put them under for good. Thierry Rouy\u00e9, chef cuisinier du restaurant La Porte, au 3627, boulevard Saint-Laurent, est constern\u00e9. Les travaux de 31 millions effectu\u00e9s sur l’art\u00e8re ont d\u00e9but\u00e9 en octobre 2006. Il pensait que le temps \u00e9tait enfin venu de jouir financi\u00e8rement des r\u00e9novations. Quand il a appris par courrier que Gaz M\u00e9tro allait casser une partie du trottoir et de la chauss\u00e9e tout neufs devant sa porte, il n’en revenait pas.<\/p>\n

\u00abC’est dur, dit aussi Mario Oliveira, copropri\u00e9taire du caf\u00e9 M\u00e9li\u00e8s. On esp\u00e8re que les clients vont \u00eatre solidaires des commer\u00e7ants. C’est inacceptable, car Gaz M\u00e9tro est au courant depuis 2004 que des travaux s’en viennent. Plusieurs commerces ont ferm\u00e9 depuis 2006. Mon chiffre d’affaires a baiss\u00e9 de 40% \u00e0 cause des travaux.\u00bb<\/p>\n

M. Oliveira, aussi secr\u00e9taire de la Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de d\u00e9veloppement du boulevard Saint-Laurent, va demander \u00e0 Gaz M\u00e9tro une aide pour relancer le boulevard quand l’entreprise aura achev\u00e9 son travail, fin mai.<\/p>\n

(…)Gaz M\u00e9tro reconna\u00eet ses torts. L’entreprise s’excuse et mettra tout en oeuvre pour que les travaux soient ex\u00e9cut\u00e9s rapidement et sans trop de cons\u00e9quences pour les citoyens, les commer\u00e7ants, les autobus et les automobilistes. Elle s’engage \u00e0 payer tous les pots cass\u00e9s, ce que la Ville lui a demand\u00e9, et \u00e0 aider les commer\u00e7ants, comme elle l’a d\u00e9j\u00e0 fait.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
