Margaret McCollum used to frequent Embankment Station inside London’s Underground just to hear the voice that warns passengers to ‘mind the gap.’ The familiar voice that echoed through the Tube was recorded by McCollum’s late husband Oswald Lawrence, and even before his death, she loved to hear it ring throughout the terminal. McCollum, 65, says hearing the voice on the platform after her husbands death brought her great comfort.<\/p>\n

The 40-year-old recording was removed when a new broadcast system was introduced and the much loved voice was gone.<\/p>\n

The Underground’s staff was so moved by McCollum’s story that they dug up a copy of the recording and gave it to the widow. They are working to restore it to the station.<\/p>\n

The Underground is celebrating its 150th anniversary.<\/p>\n
